For quite some time, viewers of Squid Game have pondered over the symbolic significance of the triangles, squares, and circles frequently depicted within the show. However, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has finally provided a clear explanation for this mystery in a recent interview. During the conversation, the acclaimed director shared the inspiration behind incorporating these symbols into Squid Game and elaborated on their connections to the real world.
Hwang Dong-hyuk explains hidden meaning of Squid Game’s shapes
At a recent press event, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared the significance behind the recurring symbols seen throughout Squid Game. He mentioned that these ideas came to him as he initially developed the concept for this popular South Korean TV show.
When I initially envisioned this concept, those very shapes popped into my head naturally. You see, I was essentially reminiscing about myself as a child, and doodling simple shapes like circles, triangles, and squares on the ground was something I used to do.” (Hwang Dong-hyuk)
Significantly, shapes play a crucial role in the storyline of Squid Game, spanning all three seasons. These shapes appear not only on the guards’ masks, Dalgona cookies, and the cards used by Gong Yoo’s character during player recruitment, but also as the setting for the final game in Season 1.
In conversation, Hwang Dong-hyuk explained how the symbols in Squid Game reflect real-world situations, likening them to “the endless competition characteristic of late capitalism.” He further noted, “We utilize these shapes in our series to illustrate the class distinctions among the guards. I believe that these basic and universal geometric figures… have become emblematic not only of our show but also of some contemporary societal issues we are grappling with today.
In contrast, as a Squid Game spin-off prepares to debut, followers must say farewell to the narrative of Seong Gi-hun in Season 3. The concluding chapter of the widely praised South Korean production can currently be streamed on Netflix.
