As eager fans eagerly await the arrival of Squid Game Season 3, the mastermind behind Netflix’s beloved show, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has shed some light on the future of the series. Sadly for Squid Game enthusiasts, it appears that a fourth season in the franchise may not be on the cards, as Hwang has hinted that the story will draw to a close this year itself.
Hwang Dong-hyuk is interested in Squid Game spin-off instead of Season 4
Recently, Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed plans for his popular South Korean dystopian survival drama series, Squid Game. The Primetime Emmy winner mentioned that there isn’t a Season 4 planned and instead, the story of Lee Jung-jae’s character Seong Gi-hun will be concluded in the upcoming Season 3.
According to Hwang, after viewing Season 3, some might believe there could be a Season 4, while others may find it unnecessary. However, he clarified that Squid Game will indeed conclude with the release of Season 3. Despite this, he has pondered the possibility of delving deeper into the expansive universe of Squid Game beyond Seong Gi-hun’s story, although not imminently, as he mentioned, “I have contemplated a spin-off. During production, I even found myself becoming curious about it.” (as reported by The Korea Times)
Previously, Hwang Dong-hyuk mentioned that if a Squid Game spin-off is approved, he has plans for the potential project’s timeline. At the 2025 Gotham Television Awards red carpet on June 2nd, Hwang stated, “Should I create a spin-off, it will be about events taking place during the three-year gap between Season 1 and 2. I want to explore what happened during that time.”
Following his dismissal of Squid Game Season 4 and hinting at a possible spin-off down the line, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk will instead focus his efforts on the last part of his critically acclaimed series, set to premiere on Netflix on June 27, 2025.
