Squid Game Creator Explains What [Spoiler]’s Final Line Means About Humans

Creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, recently shared insights into a significant part of the Season 3 ending during an interview about the show. This popular Korean survival drama first streamed on Netflix on September 17, 2021, and garnered immense popularity, leading to its continuation on the platform. Seasons 2 and 3 were then released on December 26, 2024, and June 27, 2025, respectively.

Hwang Dong-hyuk on why Gi-hun’s final sentence was incomplete in Squid Game

In the sixth episode of Squid Game Season 3, Lee Jung-jae’s character, Seong Gi-hun, delivers a powerful closing speech about the game, emphasizing that the VIPs have no business exploiting desperate individuals for their twisted amusements. He declares, “We are not playthings,” which may be a nod to his gambling past. Gi-hun continues, “We are people. And people are…” He then takes a dramatic leap off the final tower, ending his life before finishing his statement.

In the Netflix special “Squid Game: In Conversation,” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explained that they chose to cut off Gi-hun’s speech in the final episode abruptly, as a means to highlight the intricacy and depth of human nature, rather than confining the message intended through that scene.

The writer-director clarified, “As I expanded on my thoughts, it became apparent that I couldn’t encapsulate everything in just one sentence. People are multifaceted and can’t be pigeonholed so easily. If I were to deliver a clear, straightforward message, it would potentially restrict the depth of the narrative itself. Instead, I chose to let Gi-hun convey the remainder of my intentions through his actions, choices, and the selfless act he performs to rescue that child.

As a gamer, I appreciate how the creators left Gi-hun’s speech unfinished in that scene. If they had wrapped it up neatly, the story would have ended with a clear-cut conclusion. But, by leaving it open-ended, it feels like we, the audience, are still engaged in an ongoing dialogue with them. So instead of a final resolution, it’s more like they’re posing a question to us at the end.

Squid Game in Conversation and all episodes of Squid Game are available on Netflix.
