Squid Game 2: The Tragic Story Behind Rapper Thanos

If you aren’t well-versed in K-Pop or the South Korean music scene, chances are you haven’t come across this event yet. Let us clarify the authenticity of the character Thanos and shed light on how this acting stint has transformed the life of the actor for you.

Squid Game 2: Thanos’ tragic backstory

In a more relaxed and readable manner: Thanos, portrayed by the renowned Korean rapper T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyun), brings a flamboyant and humorous touch to the second season of Squid Game.

Or even simpler: In the second season of Squid Game, Thanos is played by popular South Korean rapper T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyun), who adds a comical flair to his character.

Before signing with YG Entertainment, he honed his skills as an underground rapper. In 2006, he made his official debut as the lead rapper of the immensely popular Asian boy band BigBang, which was also one of the best-selling boy bands globally.

Despite serving in the military from 2018 to 2020, a requirement in South Korea, he was apprehended for illegally using marijuana during this time, as drug possession and use are strictly prohibited.

In the wake of that harrowing event, I was unfortunately discovered, comatose, suspected to have taken an excessive amount of anti-anxiety medication. Fortunately, I made a full recovery, but my ordeal led to a court-imposed two-year probation for my use of prescribed drugs.

Subsequently, he faded into obscurity and became absent from public view. Due to the significant damage done to his reputation, it seemed that no one in the entertainment industry was willing to collaborate with him – everyone except for his longtime friend Lee Jung-jae, who plays the lead character Gi-hun, and the series’ director Hwang Dong-hyuk.

In his own words, the director of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, explained that choosing T.O.P for the role was a thoughtful decision, as he believed T.O.P’s multifaceted qualities would add depth to the character.

Even though the actor had been away from the entertainment world for many years, Hwang recognized his ability to portray a character such as Thanos – grandiose, imperfect, and remarkably human.

In a press conference, Hwang stated, “I knew about Seung-hyun’s background, but I also recognized his potential to add depth and charm to this character. The rapper Thanos is a complex figure with an imposing presence, and I felt that T.O.P was the ideal choice to portray him.

And he really is!

Doesn’t matter if he’s T.O.P or Thanos, Choi Seung-hyun truly is iconic
