Splinter Cell remake devs engaged in “retrospective” lessons to understand what made the series great

Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell Remake has been in development since 2022. While not much is known about the upcoming return of iconic stealth game protagonist Sam Fisher, Ubisoft is still working on the long-awaited video game.

Ubisoft’s official silence on the project has not gone unnoticed by fans, but developers who have since left the project have revealed some key details about the title’s early development. Once in the works alongside a now-cancelled VR game, Ubisoft employees engaged in “retrospective” lessons about the stealth series to understand what fans loved about the now 24-year old franchise.

Ubisoft held Splinter Cell retrospective lessons

Revealed by former Splinter Cell Remake tools support specialist Wesley Chartrand, Ubisoft ran retrospective lessons for new developers working on the next game in the series.

Revealed on LinkedIn, Chartrand, who spent “two years” working on the upcoming remake, “organised and ran retrospectives for the Splinter Cell DevOps team” to better understand what made the series great

Alongside running and organising the aforementioned retrospectives, Chartrand “served as Scrum Master on Splinter Cell, removing blockers to maintain optimal efficiency” for the “DevOps team” working on the title.

Alongside the internal retrospectives to understand the DNA of the series, Splinter Cell Remake is being spearheaded by game director Andrea Schmoll. Prior to her work at Ubisoft designing systems for Far Cry 6, the game director was a systems designer on Dishonored 2, the best modern stealth game of the last generation.

With regular reviews and an experienced head leading in covert operations, Ubisoft might bring back the Splinter Cell series to remarkable heights. Given the bumps the series has faced over the last ten years, could we witness a comeback of Sam Fisher in the near future? Regrettably, only the passing of time can provide an answer.

The latest installment of the series, Blacklist, came out as far back as 2013, receiving widespread critical acclaim. Since then, Ubisoft has put out several books and a radio drama featuring Will Poulter, but it’s been twelve years since they released another main game in the series.
