Spike Lee has shared insights regarding his forthcoming film, a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, along with hinting at any possible future retirement decisions he might contemplate.

What did Spike Lee say about retiring?

During his speech at the fourth Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday (THR reports), director Lee hinted at the possibility of retirement. At age 67, he humorously inquired about Akira Kurosawa’s age when he stopped working, and upon learning that Kurosawa retired at 81, Lee laughed and said he still had plenty of time left to create more work.

Lee inquired, “Indeed. I’m curious, how old was Kurosawa when he made his final movie? Could someone check that for me?” To which someone might respond, “Yes, around 81 years old. That gives me hope… If you can earn a living by doing what you love, consider yourself fortunate… And as I grow older, I’ve come to believe it was my fate to be a filmmaker.

Lee’s upcoming film, titled “Highest 2 Lowest,” is a modern-day adaptation of the legendary 1963 movie “High and Low” by Akira Kurosawa. This new production will boast an impressive cast headed by Denzel Washington and Ilfenesh Hadera. Originally released in 1963, the classic film “High and Low” was helmed by the renowned director Akira Kurosawa. The original cast included Toshiro Mifune as Kingo Gondo, Tatsuya Nakadai as Inspector Tokura, Kyōko Kagawa as Reiko Gondo, and Tatsuya Mihashi as Kawanishi.

In the 1963 film “High and Low,” Toshiro Mifune plays a wealthy businessman whose family is threatened by a merciless kidnapper. This masterful film noir, directed by Akira Kurosawa, not only offers an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride but also serves as a profound reflection of the Japanese society of its time. The movie is adapted from Ed McBain’s detective novel “King’s Ransom.

Spike Lee’s High and Low movie does not yet have an official release date at this time.
