Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag sue city of Los Angeles after losing home

On January 21, 2025, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles and LADWP, alleging they were responsible for the devastating wildfires that caused damage to their residence.

In the lawsuit, the couple was among those bringing the case forward. Other plaintiffs involved were Janet Pratt, William Pratt, Zach Quittman, Joanne Grey, and several others. On the other side, the defendants named in the suit were the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and the City of Los Angeles.

In the mentioned court case, Pratt and Montag accused the LADWP (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) and the City of Los Angeles of negligent management of their water supply system and aging infrastructure. They also claimed that the LADWP intentionally utilized a dry and unusable reservoir as part of an economizing strategy, which they called a “cost-cutting measure.

Meanwhile, Captain Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department admitted that the drained reservoir hampered their efforts to extinguish fires. He pointed out that the low water pressure and its effect on certain fire hydrants were significant issues. Furthermore, Pratt and Montag’s lawsuit stated that the Santa Ynez Reservoir, which had been inactive since February due to repairs, left a 117 million-gallon water storage facility empty.

1) The court papers further assert that the defendants intentionally chose a risk they were aware of, one that could potentially destroy private property in case of fires. Moreover, as Director of Arizona State University’s Water Institute, Professor Upmanu Lall points out, the scarcity of water from the reservoir forced firefighters to use weak water tanks instead, making it difficult for them to extinguish the flames.

At this point, neither the LADWP nor the city of Los Angeles has issued an official statement regarding Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag’s lawsuit.
