Space Marine 2 CEO says the game was guaranteed to sell, but no one expected such a huge success

The colossal launch success of Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 has been huge for the developer. Even with games like Knights of the Old Republic still in development, the studio has managed to not only keep its Warhammer title updated with new content, but also reveal a bigger and better sequel.

Recently, in an interview with journalist Stephen Totilo (behind a paywall), Saber Interactive CEO Matt Karch shared some insights about our game. Initially, he mentioned that we were fairly certain it would sell decently. But, the overwhelming success of the game upon release and its sustained popularity since then has taken everyone involved by surprise.

Space Marine 2 success was extremely surprising

After a decade of fans hounding for a sequel and a huge dosage of hype following the game’s reveal, Karch explained that Space Marine 2 was always going to sell on release. However, the game’s launch saw such unprecedented success that Saber weighed up the possibility of story DLC and Warhammer IP holder Games Workshop started actively looking for its next success.

“I knew Space Marine was going to do well,” the Saber CEO said. “I was betting on something that I played. I played it for over 300 hours. Did I know it was going to sell what ultimately is going to be over six million units this year? No. But I knew it would sell.”

Since the release of the game, Saber has announced a number of new titles. Alongside the next Warhammer 40K: Space Marine game, the studio is also working on KOTOR, Jurassic Park Survivor, an Avatar: The Last Airbender game and more.

Due to the success of Space Marine 2, Saber is also now able to hire more developers to work on upcoming projects as a large number of studios continue massive layoffs.

Karch mentioned that it’s great news because we’re currently hiring, as Saber is growing its collection of upcoming large-scale projects.

Continued updates for Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 won’t be affected by the development of its upcoming sequel. With years until the third game releases, Saber is committed to supporting the game’s millions of players with new Operations and more events to unlock additional cosmetics.
