Sorry Dougray Scott, Deadpool & Wolverine is now the biggest R-rated movie of all-time worldwide

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen his fair share of cinematic epics unfold on the big screen, let me tell you, the rise of R-rated blockbusters has been nothing short of a game-changer! I still remember the days when movies with an R rating were few and far between, and even rarer were the ones that managed to crack the $700 million worldwide mark. But then came Deadpool in 2016, shattering all expectations and paving the way for a new era of adult-oriented entertainment.

As a film enthusiast, let me share an interesting tidbit: Prior to 2016, only one R-rated movie had ever earned over $700 million globally. That distinction belonged to “The Matrix Reloaded,” a rarity that teenagers could enjoy without a chaperone due to its mature rating. Back then, global R-rated blockbusters were few and far between. In fact, before the 2010s, “Troy” held the position of the fifth highest grossing R-rated movie worldwide! Only 16 movies before 2010 had earned $400 million or more globally, suggesting that such films might not have broad global appeal. The general belief was that audiences, whether domestic or international, preferred family-friendly projects with minimal adult content. However, the status quo was shattered when “Deadpool” became the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time in 2016. This breakthrough proved that sequels to popular 1999 movies weren’t the only ones capable of achieving global R-rated box office success!

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel like I’ve leveled up in the cinema world as more and more global R-rated blockbusters have rolled out, from movies like It, Deadpool 2, Logan, and Oppenheimer. The climax came when Joker became the first R-rated film to rake in a staggering $1+ billion worldwide in 2019. Deadpool and Wolverine have since taken the worldwide box office crown for an R-rated movie, with a whopping $1.085 billion compared to Joker’s $1.064 billion. With more cash in the bank than ever before, these two titans show no signs of slowing down, and it looks like they’re set to keep on dominating the global box office scene, leaving all other R-rated films trailing behind them.

At present, “Deadpool & Wolverine” ranks as the 36th highest-grossing movie worldwide, just shy of “Transformers: Age of Extinction’s” $1.104 billion earnings. However, it’s expected to overtake that Michael Bay film by the end of this weekend. By the start of next week, its gross should exceed $1.150 billion, a record likely to be broken by this title. Currently, it holds the position as the 17th largest Walt Disney Pictures release ever made. It’s unlikely to surpass “Inside Out 2’s” $1.595 billion global gross to become Disney’s biggest movie of 2024, but that’s a significant hurdle for any film to conquer. As of now, “Deadpool & Wolverine” also ranks as the 11th highest-grossing Marvel Studios release in history.

As a diehard fan, I’d venture to guess that we might see this movie rake in around $1.275-$1.3 billion globally. If it manages to hit the lower end of that range, “Deadpool & Wolverine” would surpass “Frozen’s” impressive $1.273 billion gross, securing a spot as the 22nd highest-grossing movie ever made. That would also make it the seventh-highest grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe film globally, pushing “Iron Man 3” out of the top spot for now. To put it simply, even on the low end, this projected earnings would easily outdo the initial “Deadpool’s” $781.9 million worldwide gross by a staggering 63%.

Moving back to the realm of mature-rated films, despite Hollywood learning to let go and champion R-rated blockbusters, the global earnings of Deadpool and Wolverine far outshine most other R-rated productions. In fact, only about 20 R-rated movies in history (including Deadpool and Wolverine) have raked in more than $500 million globally. This dynamic duo is poised to surpass the $622.3 million global earnings of The Passion of the Christ and Logan’s $614.2 million, with ease! Even bearing the Marvel Studios emblem, Deadpool and Wolverine are shattering all expectations for mature-rated box office hits.

Is it possible that anything could dethrone the extraordinary box office success of Joker: Folie a Deux as the highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide? That’s quite a feat to beat, and even though Joker 2 might come close, it would need to significantly outperform its predecessors globally to take the title. It’s challenging to imagine any other R-rated films in the near future that could unseat Deadpool and Wolverine from this position. This record seems set for a lengthy tenure.

Having spent a significant part of my career in the film industry, I have witnessed firsthand the rollercoaster ride that is Hollywood success. As someone who has followed Shawn Levy’s career from the beginning, I must say that his latest achievement with “Deadpool & Wolverine” is truly remarkable. Prior to this film, Levy only had one movie, “Night at the Museum,” that surpassed the $500 million mark globally. Now, he stands behind the camera of the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history.
