Sophie Skelton shares a 'funny' part of the Outlander filming process

As a dedicated fan of Outlander, I’ve always been captivated by the magical journey of time travel that the characters embark on. However, hearing behind-the-scenes stories like Sophie Skelton’s account of filming at Craigh na Dun only adds to my fascination.

As a die-hard Outlander fan, I often find myself pondering about the behind-the-scenes magic of this captivating series. Yet, there are occasions when my curiosity gets the best of me and I yearn to know more about the amusing incidents that occur during filming.

As a devoted admirer, I’m excited to share that Sophie Skelton has given us a peek into the filming process. She revealed that the enchanting scenes where characters seem to travel through time are actually filmed at Craigh na Dun and other ancient stone structures. This means the camera never stops rolling, so it’s up to us actors to bring the magic of time-travel to life!

On the show, Skelton (who portrays Brianna) revealed that actors are required to assist production when their characters pass through the stones. As the camera circles the stones, the actors must sprint, mimicking the camera’s movement. By the time the camera returns to its original position beside the stones, it appears as if the character has traveled through time because there’s no one on that side. They’re actually standing on the opposite side of the stone; perhaps we can catch a glimpse of their shadows during our next viewing?

At the outset of Outlander Season 7A, Brianna and Roger find themselves returning to their own time, accompanied by their loved ones. Their daughter Mandy is born with a heart condition that can only be treated in the present. Consequently, they face a challenging choice: leaving behind their family who remain in the past, in order to ensure Mandy’s life is saved through modern surgery.

Skelton mentioned that she, Richard Rankin, and the young actors portraying Jemmy – Matthew and Andrew – thoroughly enjoyed shooting the scene. They often burst into laughter while darting among the stones, evidently making the process enjoyable for the young performers. Given their tender age, maintaining their focus is crucial for optimal performance, and this approach seems highly effective.

Won’t it take away the charm from Outlander? Absolutely not! It’s an adorable tale, now we’re ready to spot some mysterious shadows.

Outlander Season 7B premieres on Friday, Nov. 22 on Starz.
