Embracing state-of-the-art innovation, Sony is redefining game interaction by seamlessly integrating real-world and virtual aspects, resulting in a one-of-a-kind experience. This pioneering idea has spectators speculating if it’s the dawn of a novel era for entertainment. With its captivating layout, this project challenges the limits of narrative, offering an immersion that blurs the distinction between actuality and illusion. Here’s all you need to know about Sony’s upcoming project.
An Experience Unlike Any Other
At CES 2025, Sony presented a groundbreaking proof-of-concept entertainment experience for PlayStation gamers. This innovative setup allows players to fully immerse themselves in games like The Last of Us, with capabilities to visually explore, engage in combat, and even perceive the scent of enemies.

As a devoted fan, I’m blown away by Sony’s creation using cutting-edge LED panels and haptic feedback to build an incredibly immersive environment. Stepping into these virtual Seattle tunnels, I feel like I’ve been transported back to iconic scenes from The Last of Us Part II. Working in teams of four, we’re armed with two shotguns and two flashlights, each of us playing a crucial role. As our team moves forward, ominous threats lurk in the shadows – even the dreaded clickers can appear at any moment!
Interactive features enhance the overall experience as light from the flashlights impacts the virtual realm, and tactile vibrations mimic in-game events like collapses and ground shaking beneath the players’ feet.
The event transcends just gameplay elements. During a tense showdown with a horde of clickers, players come across Ellie and Dina. This encounter culminates in the group being overwhelmed, ending with a dramatic blackout. To heighten the sense of reality, the game immerses you using scents that mimic the decaying, perilous environment, thereby creating a fully sensory experience.
In a post-apocalyptic setting, where taking a shower is a rare treat and washing machines are but a faint recollection – along with the shambling undead – the primary terror in this game could potentially transition from what you see and hear, to what you smell.
Bringing the World of The Last of Us to Life
Given its immense dimensions, it’s clear that this device isn’t intended for your living room as both Sony and common sense suggest. Instead, this innovative creation could find a home in theme parks or enrich problem-solving experiences within escape rooms. In these environments, the challenge isn’t merely about beating a clock, but rather evading a runner racing towards you at top speed.
Sony refers to this undertaking as an illustration or demonstration of their vision for the Future Immersive Entertainment program. This project is a component of a larger plan aimed at reshaping narratives by leveraging advanced technology, and it embraces ideas such as “Stories in Every Corner” to merge gaming with real-life experiences.
