The initial price of PlayStation 5 has seen a substantial increase since its launch. With silicon costs remaining high and the ongoing unpredictability of U.S. tariffs under the Trump Administration, Sony is considering additional increases in the prices of both PS5 consoles and associated software.
During a discussion with investors following the publication of their recent financial statement (as reported by Eurogamer), Sony hinted at the potential for further price adjustments on its products. This decision follows the implementation of a second round of price increases for consoles across the UK, Australia, New Zealand, mainland Europe.
PS5 price could increase again
Sony disclosed that they currently have a stockpile of PS5 consoles for American consumers, enough to last three months. Yet, due to escalating tariff conditions, there’s a possibility that the company may need to transfer the additional costs brought about by tariffs onto U.S. gamers.
Regarding the tariffs, it’s not just about determining a straightforward tariff that totals 100 Billion Yen. Instead, we are considering the current data at hand and market trends, which might lead to adjustments in both pricing and shipping distribution,” said Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao.
Regarding the upcoming years, Sony might opt for locally produced hardware in relation to the PlayStation 5. Sony’s president, Hiroki Totoki, hinted at this possibility by suggesting that some PS5 console manufacturing could be moved to the United States as a potentially beneficial strategy, yet no definite plans have been set in motion.
As a passionate advocate for local production, I believe it’s a strategic move worth exploring. The PS5, which we’re producing in various regions globally, might potentially be made here in the U.S., but that decision should be carefully weighed as we look towards the future.
In the UK, since its launch in 2020, the price of the PS5 Digital Edition has risen by £70. Initially priced at £359.99, the console now costs £429.99 for the same features, excluding any significant import tariff changes.
In addition to increasing the cost of their gaming consoles, Sony has also bumped up the prices for PlayStation Plus subscriptions, causing some concern among gamers. Furthermore, there’s been criticism over the pricing of quick remaster projects since it seems like new original PlayStation first-party intellectual properties are not being released as frequently.
Despite the upcoming release of GTA 6, the PS5 is projected to maintain strong sales figures for quite some time. Although it might not surpass the rate at which the PS4 was sold, it’s important to note that the PS5 remains successful in the market even with its increasing cost.
