Had you ever played “The Last of Us” and found yourself musing, “But what about the scent of us?” Fear not, as Sony is working on incorporating real-life smells into video games for a more immersive experience.
In today’s gaming world, where visuals and narratives are at an unprecedented level, developers are increasingly striving to make their games even more engaging. Interestingly, Sony appears to see significant opportunities in… indeed, scents.
Making Games Too Immersive?
Over the past few years, virtual reality has become an increasingly significant aspect in video game creation, and Sony has been a key player in advancing this technology through innovative projects. Despite games such as “Alien: Rogue Invasion” and “Hitman World of Assassination” having their imperfections, they paved the way for the PlayStation VR 2 to achieve its strongest sales quarter since its debut.
As we progress toward a more immersive gaming era, we inadvertently edge nearer to a time where advancements might overstep boundaries – and for certain enthusiasts, one of Sony’s novel concepts may have reached that threshold.
At the CES 2025 event, Sony unveiled ideas for a technology that enables gamers to experience the scent of in-game environments, and the responses have been somewhat divided.
Not Every Player Wants To Sniff Their Game
At the CES 2025 press conference, attendees were given the opportunity to experience a unique version of “The Last of Us” game, where they could actually smell the decaying fungus in the game environment. This innovation has sparked heated discussions among fans.
One spectator expressed, “It seems we all feel the same way when I put it like this: ‘I believe I’m expressing a common sentiment: nobody was looking for this.'” Another chimed in, saying they couldn’t conceive of any game that would be improved by having a ‘scent feature’.
People appeared intrigued by the idea, discussing their desire to experience the scent of the forest in “Red Dead Redemption 2”, expressing sentiments such as: “This is an excellent concept and a promising start for enhancing immersion in future gaming experiences.
To date, Sony has not disclosed the development stage or timeline for this technology, nor have they mentioned any immediate plans to roll it out. However, given the circumstances, it may be some time before we can experience it. In the meantime: The tantalizing fungus from The Last of Us? We’ll catch its scent (possibly) in the future!
What do you think about this new technology? What games could be enhanced by adding smell to it?
