As a seasoned gamer with memories of playing Atari 2600 and Nintendo Entertainment System etched deep into my gaming history, I’ve witnessed the evolution of consoles firsthand. The news about Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) sales dip in Q1 2024 has piqued my interest.
For the initial quarter of its 2024 financial year, Sony has concluded its operations and shared its earnings data. In this report, Sony acknowledges a decrease in PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same period last year (Q1 of 2023), registering a decline of approximately 27%.
On August 7, 2024, Sony disclosed its first-quarter earnings report for the year 2024 at the crack of dawn on a Wednesday. In a supplementary information section, they highlighted the number of PlayStation 5 consoles sold during this period. The tech giant reported selling approximately 2.4 million PlayStation 5 units, representing a 27% decrease compared to Q1 2023, where Sony managed to sell 3.3 million PS5 consoles.
Each year, the number of PlayStation 5 units sold by Sony has gradually increased. In FY2023 alone, they managed to sell 20.8 million units, compared to the 19.1 million sold in the previous year. It’s intriguing to observe if this upward trend will persist, given the drop in sales experienced during the first quarter of the current period.
The PlayStation 5 was launched in November 2020, and it’s almost four years old now. Keep an eye on Shacknews for updates about the console’s performance, along with Sony’s financial reports every quarter.
