Sony shuts down Concord developer Firewalk Studios

As a long-time gamer with a soft spot for indie titles, I must admit, it’s always disheartening to see studios like Firewalk and Neon Koi shutter their doors. Concord, with its unique blend of strategy and narrative, was a breath of fresh air in the gaming landscape, and I had high hopes for its future. The swift turn of events has left me feeling rather like a player who just got an unexpected game over screen.

Sony is choosing to close Firewalk Studios, the team responsible for Concord. Additionally, they plan to shutter Neon Koi, a studio that Sony purchased in 2022.

In a leaked internal communication, the Chief Executive Officer of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hermen Hulst, announced the shutdown of Firewalk Studios.

Initially launched by Firewalk Studios, the debut title known as Concord, was unexpectedly withdrawn from service just a fortnight after its summer release. At that point, the developers mentioned they were contemplating options for its return. However, recent developments have shown Sony’s decision to permanently retire the game instead.

Established in 2020, Neon Koi later became part of the Sony family in 2022. At the time, they were developing a game with live services.

In contrast with today’s headlines, Hulst continues to be confident that Sony Interactive Entertainment is transforming into a robust and adaptable company.
