Sony reveals the PlayStation 5 Pro, launching in November for $700

As a long-time PlayStation enthusiast with deep pockets and a penchant for collecting every version of each console, I must say, Sony has me intrigued by their latest announcement – the PlayStation 5 Pro.

Sony has unveiled an upgraded version of its PS5 gaming console, named the PlayStation 5 Pro. Unlike previous versions, this mid-generation PlayStation 5 does not feature a disc drive but offers a 2TB SSD and includes Astro’s Playroom as pre-installed software. This new model is priced at a rather steep $700.

The PlayStation 5 Pro was unveiled on September 10, 2024, during its technical showcase, and is set to hit shelves on November 7, 2024, priced at $699.99 USD. If you require a disc drive, it will cost an additional $79.99 USD. Notably, the PS5 Pro doesn’t come with a stand for vertical storage; if needed, one can be purchased separately for $29.99.

If you were expecting the PS5 Pro to be more compact than the existing PlayStation 5, you might want to adjust your expectations. As per the PlayStation Blog, Sony decided to maintain the PS5 Pro’s design consistent with other PS5 products. The height remains the same as the original PS5, and the width is similar to the current model, to accommodate improved performance specifications.

The PlayStation 5 Pro includes a game called Astro’s Playroom right out of the box. This title will offer players a taste of the fantastic Astro Bot game that was recently launched, sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm for it.

After Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro, it’s intriguing to observe how both Xbox and Nintendo will respond. Microsoft has already disclosed a disc-less version of the Xbox Series X at a lower cost compared to the disc drive model, while Nintendo offers the Switch OLED variant. Last year, there was a leak suggesting an update for the Xbox Series X and controller from the FTC. Given the $700 price tag of the PS5 Pro, it could be the ideal moment for these companies to grab attention as gamers react to this new high-end console.
