Sony Pictures CEO Says They Need to Rethink ‘Snake-bitten’ Spider-Man Universe

As a long-time fan of the Spider-Man universe, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra. It seems like he’s been left to wrangle a snake that just won’t stop biting – and we all know how much fun that is!

In a recent interview, Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra discussed the future of their Marvel-based cinematic universe known as the “Spider-Man universe,” hinting that it may be necessary to reassess their strategy in light of the underwhelming box office performance of the latest film featuring Kraven the Hunter.

In conversation with the Los Angeles Times, Vinciquerra admitted that he thinks the approach of the Spider-man film series may require reevaluation. He described the universe as “cursed,” suggesting that even if a film is well-made or poorly received, it’s likely to face criticism.

What did Sony’s CEO say about the Spider-Man universe movies?

Vinciquerra expressed that we might have to reconsider our approach as it’s been problematic in the past. Launching a new one may lead to its downfall, regardless of whether it’s excellent or poor quality.

In his remarks, the CEO mentioned the underperformance of Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter, two Spider-Man related films that received negative feedback from critics and viewers alike. As per Vinciquerra, the movies themselves weren’t poorly made, but the unfavorable response they received contributed to their lack of popularity among audiences.

“For a brief moment, let’s discuss Madame Web. Despite being well-received on Netflix, the movie didn’t do well in theaters as it was heavily criticized by the media, according to Vinciquerra. He believes that the films based on Kraven and Madame Web weren’t poor productions, but the press seemed to disapprove of them, which led the critics to tear them apart. Interestingly, they also did this with Venom initially, but the audience adored Venom, making it a box office success. It seems that these movies were unfairly criticized by the media for some reason.

In more casual terms, Kraven the Hunter – Sony’s recent addition to the Spider-Man movie universe – didn’t do so hot. It’s earned just $43.9 million at the box office and garnered mostly unfavorable feedback from both fans and critics.
