According to Jason Schreier, Sony tried to develop a God of War live service game for years.
Previously, Sony appeared to believe that live service games would dominate the gaming landscape and had over a dozen such games in production. However, over the past few years, this number significantly decreased until only six remained by the end of 2023. Interestingly, this was just before Helldivers II was released and Concord encountered difficulties in 2024.
According to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, it’s been made official that two more live-service games which haven’t been announced yet, have been scrapped.
Among these options, one title under development by Bluepoint Games over the past few years is a live-service version of God of War.
Kratos X Fortnite?
Transforming God of War into a live service game proved challenging, and it seems Sony eventually concluded that the concept might not have been a good fit for the God of War series. While the specific reasons for cancellation remain unknown, it’s plausible that they determined God of War wasn’t designed to adapt to such a project. It’s likely for the best as most gamers wouldn’t appreciate seeing Kratos adorned with Fortnite-style new skins on a monthly basis.
Bluepoint Games, known for their work on various ports and remasters such as Demon’s Souls and Uncharted, have collaborated with Sony to launch live service projects in the past. According to Schreier, the studio is not closing down but the specific projects they will tackle in the future remain uncertain.
As a devoted admirer of the God of War series, I can’t help but wonder: Wouldn’t it be fascinating to transform this epic saga into an ever-evolving life service game? To delve deeper into Kratos’ journey and explore new realms alongside him – that’s the dream! But how could such a game be brought to life?
First, the developers would need to create a living, breathing world for players to explore, complete with dynamic weather systems, day-night cycles, and changing seasons. Second, the combat system, one of God of War’s strongest suits, would need to be refined and expanded upon. Introducing new enemies, abilities, and strategic elements would keep battles fresh and engaging for even the most seasoned warriors.
Lastly, an ongoing narrative would be crucial to keep players invested in Kratos’ tale. This could be achieved through regular updates that introduce new story arcs, characters, and lore tidbits.
