The fairy tale movie “Snow White” has turned out to be one of Disney’s biggest box office disappointments, sparking discussions about the amount of money Disney might have lost on its live-action version. Featuring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, the film failed to draw in viewers despite boasting a high-profile cast. The poor box office performance and escalating controversies surrounding the production have left Disney facing a considerable financial setback.
How much money will Disney lose with Snow White’s flop?
Globally, Snow White has grossed approximately $225 million at the box office. Around $100 million of this total is attributed to ticket sales within the U.S., while the remaining $125 million came from international markets.
For clarity, it’s worth noting that Snow White’s earnings were significantly lower than Disney’s 2019 live-action reboot of Dumbo, which brought in around $115 million within the U.S., effectively categorizing it as a financial disappointment.
It’s projected that Disney will earn approximately $295 million from worldwide movie rentals, home entertainment sales, streaming, and merchandise. Yet, this figure is significantly overshadowed by the film’s production and marketing costs. The reported expenses for Snow White amounted to around $410 million, leading to an estimated Disney loss of approximately $115 million.
One major concern for the movie was its significant drop in earnings after its initial weekend release. The film earned $14.2 million, marking a steep 66% decrease compared to previous Disney remakes like Dumbo and Maleficent. This steeper decline suggests a challenging path ahead, as the movie has only amassed $143.1 million worldwide so far, according to Deadline.
Enhancing the challenges she faces, Snow White has been enveloped in debate since the beginning, largely stemming from remarks made by Rachel Zegler about the initial 1937 animated movie.
Although the movie’s box office run didn’t succeed, there’s hope that Snow White might find success when it premieres on Disney+. It’s known for some films to regain their popularity via streaming platforms, but it’s yet undetermined if Snow White will follow this pattern.
