To this point, Universal Studios has produced captivating biographical films about renowned hip-hop artists such as Eminem in 8 Mile and N.W.A in Straight Outta Compton. Now, Universal is set to create their third hip-hop biopic, focusing on the life of American rapper, record producer, and actor, Snoop Dogg. The Drop It Like It’s Hot rapper himself is one of the co-producers for this upcoming film, which has already secured its lead and director.
The biographical film about Snoop Dogg will mark the initial project under Death Row Pictures’ partnership with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios. Notably, Snoop Dogg has a pre-existing relationship with NBCUniversal, serving as a judge during season 28 of The Voice. The upcoming movie was initially revealed to be in development back in 2022. Joe Robert Cole, who co-wrote the script for Black Panther 2, is collaborating on the screenplay for this film.
The storyline of the Snoop Dogg biopic will trace Calvin Broadus Jr.’s journey into the realm of West Coast hip-hop, where he’ll first appear as Snoop Doggy Dogg. He’ll be known for his incisive rhymes on Death Row Records and working closely with Dr. Dre to produce the album “Doggystyle.” The biopic will also highlight his friendship with Martha Stewart and an intriguing poolside encounter with Michael Phelps during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Who will be portraying Snoop Dogg in the biopic?
According to Deadline, Jonathan Daviss is set to play the role of Snoop Dogg. This Texas-born actor has previously appeared in films such as Age of Summer and the movie Edge of the World.
As a gamer, I’ve just learned that Jonathan Daviss has been cast in our game, and this news follows the confirmation that Craig Brewer will be directing. Known for his work in music movies like Hustle & Flow, which won an Oscar for Best Original Song, and the Footloose remake, Brewer has also dabbled in the biopic genre with Dolemite Is My Name and the upcoming musical-drama Song Sung Blue featuring Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet.
