Sniper Elite: Resistance sends players into occupied France to stop a Nazi superweapon

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that Sniper Elite: Resistance has piqued my interest like no other World War II game in recent memory. Having played countless stealth-action shooters, I’ve grown accustomed to the formula, but Rebellion seems to have taken it to a whole new level.

In the Sniper Elite series, players are about to return to World War 2 with the latest installment, titled Sniper Elite: Resistance. This time around, you’ll assume the role of Special Operations Executive (SOE) agent Harry Hawker, who will be navigating Nazi-occupied France to unravel and disrupt a secret Nazi weapon. Having played one mission from the upcoming game, I can confidently say that we’re in store for an expansive and thrilling Sniper Elite adventure!

Checking in, Mr. Hawker?

In my thrilling encounter with Sniper Elite: Resistance, I found myself immersed in a sprawling campaign set within an urban French cityscape, where I became part of the mission to thwart the Germans’ development of their secret weapon, the Wunderwaffe. As a covert operative, my objective was to infiltrate heavily guarded strongholds, retrieve crucial documents hidden deep within these German-controlled high-value buildings, and make a hasty exit using any resources at my disposal.

To elaborate further, this opportunity I’ve been discussing was my collection of resources, gathered as I progressed. You begin with a suppressed handgun ideal for stealthy takedowns at close range, an automatic weapon for unexpected firefights, and your reliable rifle. The rifle provides the Sniper Elite bonus of slow-motion bullet trajectory and a gruesome x-ray view of the damage inflicted when you execute a precise shot. The Resistance’s x-ray bullet cam remains as detailed as ever. When I aimed at a helmeted soldier, the game displayed the bullet’s path in detail, along with a gory x-ray of the wound, showcasing the helmet being knocked off, broken bones, torn muscles, spurts of blood, and other graphical details that would make the developers from Mortal Kombat’s NetherRealm Studios envious.

This game boasts an impressive feature called X-ray bullet cam, but that’s not all it has to offer. Another standout aspect is the flexibility in executing your mission, offering a variety of choices for the astute player. For instance, you could traverse the bridge or slip beneath it unnoticed. You might opt to go straight to the lavish hotel where some documents are concealed and then move on to the hilltop facility, or vice versa. Upon reaching the luxury hotel, I discovered that there were multiple ways to access the room containing the documents: either by locating a key among the bodies of fallen officers or by unearthing a satchel charge to blow open the door. Additionally, I noticed other spots on the map where I could force open locked doors with a crowbar. The diverse paths you can take, the play styles available, and the unpredictable outcomes make this game an exhilarating experience.

Wow, things certainly didn’t go as planned! After picking up the documents at the hotel, I found a zipline that took me down from its roof. This seemed ideal for an escape rather than initiating the second objective. Although it was thrilling, it landed me in a courtyard swarming with Nazis. I fled on foot until I was riddled with bullets. It was a laughable turn of events, and I’ll need to adjust my strategy. However, the variety of options that appear to be available now has me pumped!

As always, your main objective… Kill Hitler!

During Sniper Elite: Resistance, we encountered an abundance of details and possibilities within a single mission alone. The addition of cooperative play, the returning adversarial mode Invasion Mode, and secret Propaganda missions scattered across each campaign map make it seem like Rebellion has crafted another exceptional stealth-action sandbox game. It’s exciting to anticipate if the rest of the game will be as richly designed as we eagerly await its launch in January 2025.

These impressions are based on a remote play session operated by the publisher. Sniper Elite: Resistance comes out on January 30, 2025.
