Smurfs Reviews & Rotten Tomatoes Score Are Horrible

Initially receiving poor feedback, the new adaptation of Smurfs has been met with largely negative reviews from critics, scoring poorly on Rotten Tomatoes. The animated reboot directed by Chris Miller seems to be struggling to find its rhythm, as many critics label it “tedious” and burdened by excessive corporate influence.

Critics aren’t loving the new Smurfs movie in reviews

Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian stated that this movie once more demonstrates an inherent quality of the Smurfs that seems to be toxic for humor and enjoyment. Mark Kermode, on the other hand, referred to it as a nonsensical adventure where the Smurfs move through multiple universes just like superheroes in Kermode and Mayo’s Take.

Jake Coyle from the Associated Press noted that the entire venture seemed to be driven by the stresses surrounding intellectual property rights. Odie Henderson of The Boston Globe expressed that, after watching this uninteresting animation, he felt as though he had been deceived like a naive Smurf for expecting anything good.

John Nugent from Empire Magazine criticized the film, giving it a single star, and commented that it was a dull addition to an already monotonous series, with a strong scent of corporate control throughout it. Barry Hertz from The Globe and Mail questioned why director Chris Miller put in so much effort and resources into launching these Smurfs into the Smurf world, as there seems to be no compelling reason for it.

Alonso Duralde from The Film Verdict commented, “There’s too much idle time between the occasional enjoyments offered by the Smurfs.” Michael O’Sullivan of The Washington Post gave it a 2 out of 4 and stated, “The Smurfs are scattered across the multiverse, but they fail to deliver anything worth sharing in a letter home.” Frank Scheck from The Hollywood Reporter observed, “Chris Miller directed this film, who also voices the Grouchy Smurf. It’s simple to see why he identified with that character while making the movie.

Critic Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent (UK) rated it 1/5 and described it as “simultaneously unoriginal and overflowing with new Smurf backstory.” Kevin Maher from The Times (UK) simply stated, “It’s void of depth and substance. There’s no incentive to watch it.
