Legendary Motown performer and composer, Smoky Robinson, is grappling with severe legal issues following four ex-employees’ lawsuit allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment. The suit, submitted in Los Angeles, outlines accusations dating back over a decade and lists both Robinson and his wife as defendants.
Here’s what we know so far about the allegations against Smokey Robinson.
Smokey Robinson accused of alleged sexual assault by four women
On May 6, 2025, four ex-employees brought a legal action against Smokey Robinson in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleging incidents of sexual assault, rape, and harassment.
Based on court documents obtained by PEOPLE and Reuters, four women, referred to as Jane Does 1 through 4, have claimed multiple instances of sexual battery, assault, unlawful confinement, gender-based violence, and labor law violations while they were working for Robinson from 2006 to 2024.
In a lawsuit, the ex-housekeepers (the plaintiffs) assert that they were subjected to abuse within Robinson’s residence in Los Angeles’ Chatsworth district. Jane Doe 1 accuses Smokey Robinson of sexual assault occurring at least seven times, with an instance on February 17, 2024, being specifically mentioned. Meanwhile, Jane Doe 2 and 3 allege that they suffered more than 20 such assaults each.
In Jane Doe’s claim, it is stated that the mistreatment started back in 2007 and persisted until her departure in 2024. Additionally, the women have pointed fingers at Robinson’s wife, Frances Robinson, for fostering a toxic work atmosphere and employing language perceived as derogatory towards certain ethnicities.
The lawsuit states that Frances Robinson was aware of previous instances of sexual misconduct but did not take the necessary steps to address it properly. One accuser stated she resigned in 2020 because of multiple sexual assaults, while another reported the abuse started as early as 2016. A third woman claimed Robinson sexually assaulted her from behind while she was lying on a towel. The women allege that cultural taboos, low wages, and fear of reprisal prevented them from reporting sooner.
The lawsuit aims for at least $50 million in compensation, as stated by John Harris, their attorney, who added that such an amount is justified given the serious nature of Mr. Robinson’s abhorrent behavior. At a press conference, three women wore masks, with another participating remotely. Notably, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office has yet to receive a case from law enforcement.
Robinson and his representatives have not issued a public statement.
