Smile 2 Director Explains How Sequel Takes Curse in New Direction

As a gamer with a knack for horror movies and a deep appreciation for unexpected twists, I am eagerly anticipating the release of Smile 2. Having survived countless nights playing survival horror games and binge-watching horror films, I’ve developed an uncanny ability to guess the next scare or plot twist, but the director’s promise of taking the story in a new direction has piqued my interest.

In the upcoming movie titled “Smile 2“, the chilling smile is poised to make a lethal comeback. Although director Parker Finn has shared that we learned about the curse in the original “Smile”, he promises that the sequel will take us on a different path with the Smile Entity.

In a conversation with Total Film, Finn explained that since the initial mystery has been solved and the audience is now more familiar with it, this new context provides an exciting opportunity to reposition them in the story. Essentially, he wanted to explore whether we could utilize this knowledge to enhance the film’s narrative.

Finn mentioned that we merely lifted a tiny part of the carpet to get a glimpse, but the next installment is likely to shock quite a few folks,” he said.

What to Expect in Smile 2?

Naomi Scott plays Skye Riley, a famous pop singer who is afflicted by a curse prior to embarking on a global concert tour.

As global pop star Skye Riley prepares for a new world tour, she starts encountering mysterious and alarming incidents. Struggling with these growing terrors and the weight of stardom, Skye is compelled to confront her hidden past in order to reclaim her life before it slips away from her control.

In addition to Scott, the cast includes Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Raúl Castillo, Dylan Gelula, and Ray Nicholson. Kyle Gallner returns as Joel, the police officer from Smile who is under a curse.

Finn is responsible for writing, directing, and producing the sequel to Smile, which was a massive hit for Paramount in 2022. His initial film, Smile, had an impressive box office run, earning more than $217 million on a production budget of just $17 million. Originally intended as a direct-to-streaming release, the studio ultimately chose to launch it in theaters in September 2022 instead.

Besides Smile 2, Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Isaac Klausner, and Robert Salerno are also involved as co-producers.

Smile 2 scares its way into theaters on October 18, 2024.
