SM Entertainment & TV Chosun’s Trot Idol Project: What Is It About?

As a long-time fanatic of Korean music, having witnessed the rise and evolution of genres since the early days of K-pop, I can’t help but feel a thrill coursing through my veins at this latest development! The collaboration between SM Entertainment and TV Chosun to launch a new Trot group is an exciting twist in the industry, blending the traditional charm of Trot with the modern appeal of K-pop.

As an enthusiastic fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be part of an exciting journey as SM Entertainment gears up to debut a groundbreaking show, showcasing emerging talents in the world of Trot music to a global audience. Collaborating with TV Chosun for this new Trot program, we’re about to witness something extraordinary!

On August 12th, top executives from two agencies gathered for a meeting to discuss an upcoming collaboration. Specifically, Bang Jeong-oh (Vice President of TV Chosun), Tak Young-Jun (CEO of SM Entertainment), Lee Sung-soo (CEO of KMR), Ahn Seok-jun (TV Chosun E&M CEO), and producer Cho Young-soo convened at the SM Entertainment headquarters in Seongsu-dong to exchange details about the project they’re planning.

For those unfamiliar, Trot is a well-loved traditional genre of South Korean music that resonates deeply with its audience. Notable trot artists include Lim Young Woong and Jang Minho.

SM Entertainment & TV Chosun to launch Trot Idol Project

A renowned entertainment company, SM Entertainment, along with TV Chosun, will introduce a fresh five-member Trot band. This group aims to exhibit their skills, blending K-pop and Trot genres on a global scale. The CEO of KREATION Music Rights, Lee Sung Su, expressed his enthusiasm: “SM, known for its innovative approach in music, is extending its influence yet again. I’m looking forward to partnering with TV Chosun, a well-respected name in Trot.”

Our goal is to present a fresh, fusion style of music by combining K-pop and trot genres. The compelling narratives of our five distinct members will undoubtedly touch hearts. I eagerly anticipate everyone’s support for this exciting venture!

Fan speculation suggests that the SM Rookie, Shohei, might be a part of the upcoming group based on label-released photos of the lineup. In the past, Shohei was a member of Avex group unit BXB, which disbanded in 2018 after his joining in 2017. Notably, Shohei admires EXO’s Sehun as his role model.

It’s said that the new group comprises “Mr. Trot” singers, international K-pop trainees, and actors. Before their official launch, a TV show on Chosun will be broadcast, chronicling the journey of these promising beginners from their initial stages to the moment they debut.
