Microsoft has shared the news that they’re closing Skype in May, marking the end of its 21-year run. Instead, they recommend users transition to Microsoft Teams, where they can conveniently log in with their existing Skype login details.
On May 5, 2025, as stated in a recent blog post, the services provided by Skype will come to an end. Previously bought by Microsoft for $8.5 billion in 2011, Skype will ultimately merge completely with Microsoft Teams. This transition enables users to access Teams using their existing Skype login details.
Established in 2003, Skype gained significant prominence throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, playing a crucial role in popularizing video calls. However, with the rise of services such as FaceTime and Zoom, Skype gradually lost its shine and fell into lesser use over time. Despite the unprecedented growth of video call apps during the COVID-19 pandemic, Skype remains somewhat forgotten.
Users on Skype who aren’t intending to switch to Teams have the opportunity to save their data (chats, contacts, call logs) before the service is officially discontinued. To stay informed about Microsoft’s latest updates regarding its services and products, keep checking in here at Shacknews.
