Netflix’s latest dark comedy, “Sirens,” concludes with an unexpected turn: Simone’s and Michaela’s lives are swapped, potentially for their benefit or detriment. The ending also references the Greek myth of Sirens, but presents a fresh interpretation from a feminist viewpoint, drawing parallels to modern times.
Over the thrilling Labor Day weekend, I found myself joining forces with Simone, Michaela, and Devon. Little did we know that this event would set our lives on a completely new trajectory. Yet, amidst all the chaos and tumultuous events unfolding in our story, it was Peter Kell, the magnate, who seemed untouched by the upheavals.
Why did Simone replace Michaela in Sirens’ ending?
In the finale of Netflix’s Sirens, it was revealed that Simone Dewitt (played by Milly Alcock) assumed the role and lifestyle of Michaela Kell, also known as Kiki (portrayed by Julianne Moore). This transition effectively placed her in Peter’s life where Kiki once stood.
Initially, Simone accepted the position of Michaela Kell’s personal in-house assistant, eager to escape her life in Buffalo. However, ultimately, she found herself in a situation where she had to act against Kiki for her own preservation.
At the start of episode 5, or the finale, of Sirens, Simone learns that Michaela dismissed her due to a kiss shared with Peter, her husband. Despite explaining to Mrs. Kell that it was actually Peter who instigated the kiss, her superior remained unmoved by her defense.

As Simone prepares to depart from the island, a chilling apprehension overtakes her. The prospect of resuming her ordinary existence in Buffalo, which was far from glamorous, fills the Yale dropout with dread. Consequently, she decided to revisit the opulent mansion in search of answers.
Eventually, when Simone spots Peter on the beach, she realizes that her only option for leaving Buffalo is by staying at the Cliff House. Given Peter’s existing fascination with her, Simone revealed Michaela’s scheme to extort him using a photo of them kissing.
For a seasoned billionaire like him, the remainder is straightforward, as he’s been down this path before. Just as his initial spouse, Jocelyn, was replaced by someone new, Michaela finds herself being swapped for Simone, who graces their grand event as Peter’s chosen companion.
Was Sirens’ Michaela really a cult leader?
As the curtain fell on Sirens, I found myself engaged in a conversation with Michaela (Meghann Fahy) aboard a ferry. In a subtle nod to the “cult” rumors that had been circulating, she implied that her status as “Mrs. Kell” was what had attracted attention and, in turn, allowed her to form a sort of “tribe.
In the show, executive producer Smith Metzler revised the interpretation of Michaela’s magical abilities. Metzler expressed enthusiastically, “If character Kiki possesses a magical power, it lies in her role as an enabler for some of the communication between Devon and Simone,” she stated.
In the end, it’s through Michaela’s captivating aura that Sirens spins a tale of magical realism, in which charm turns into a form of payment. However, despite their intentions, women find themselves trapped by the same men they aim to bewitch.
