Singer Hayley Kiyoko to Direct Girls Like Girls Movie for Focus Features

Hayley Kiyoko, a popular singer-songwriter known for her role in Lemonade Mouth, is teaming up with Focus Features for the movie version of Girls Like Girls, which is based on her widely-shared 2015 song and music video. In a forthcoming project, titled “Girls Like Girls,” the directorial role is assigned to Kiyoko, who will collaborate with Stefanie Scott on the script. Notably, Stefanie Scott was one of the prominent figures in the music video for the same title, which has garnered over 157 million views on YouTube. The video also featured Kelsey Asbille from Yellowstone and Hayden Thompson. This film will narrate a universal tale about experiencing first love and self-acceptance throughout the journey.

This coming-of-age book climbed to the top of the New York Times bestseller list and was honored with a Goldie Award for Young Adult Fiction from the Golden Crown Literary Society.

In the official summary of the 2023 book, we find that the story unfolds during summertime. Seventeen-year-old Coley finds herself alone yet again, following her mother’s recent passing. Relocated to rural Oregon, she is cautious about her heart, fearing any potential heartbreak. However, a chance encounter with Sonya stirs an instant connection. Coley grapples with self-doubt, questioning whether she truly deserves love. After all, everyone she’s loved has abandoned her in the past. What if Sonya is too timid to reciprocate?
