Sing Street Director’s Power Ballad With Paul Rudd & Nick Jonas Acquired by Lionsgate

As a huge fan of John Carney’s films, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that his latest project, “Power Ballad,” has been acquired by Lionsgate for distribution in key markets. The news came after the film finished shooting in Dublin, Ireland, with an impressive cast led by Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas.

Power Ballad, the new film from Sing Street director John Carney, has been acquired by Lionsgate.

I’m thrilled to share that a new movie called “Power Ballad,” helmed by talented director Carney, has just wrapped up filming in the enchanting city of Dublin, Ireland. In this production, we have the pleasure of watching Paul Rudd, whom we know from his roles in Ant-Man and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, shine on screen. Additionally, Nick Jonas, an actor I’ve admired in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Chaos Walking, will also be gracing us with his presence.

Lionsgate revealed that they have purchased the rights to distribute the film in the US, Canada, UK, and Ireland. A specific release date is still under determination.

“For a long time, I’ve been deeply fond of John’s films, and this specific project has caught my attention for quite some time,” expressed Adam Fogelson from Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “This production showcases the peak of John’s innovative skills, an appealing theme, and a stellar cast. I’m thrilled that they have chosen us to be part of it.”

Carney expressed her joy, stating, “It’s a dream come true that this film, which I’ve held close to my heart for so long, has finally found a place. Movies with musical themes are best enjoyed in the company of others. And who better than Lionsgate to share this movie with the world, allowing us to watch it together in a dark theater, creating bonds with strangers that last only a few hours but feel like lifetimes.”

What else do we know about Power Ballad?

As a gamer, I’d describe it like this: In this power ballad story, I embody an experienced wedding singer, past my prime but still holding on to my musical talents. Meanwhile, there’s a young rockstar, struggling to make it in his career. By some twist of fate, he stumbles upon my hidden potential and uses my songwriting skills to fuel his own success.

Carney, recognized for directing “Once” (2007), “Begin Again” (2013), “Sing Street” (2016), and more recently, “Flora and Son” (2023), collaborated on the script with Peter McDonald. He also serves as a producer, teaming up with Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron from Likely Story, and Robert Walpole and Rebecca O’Flanagan from Treasure Entertainment.

30WEST and Screen Ireland financed and executive produced Power Ballad.
