Recently on social media, there’s been a debate sparked over images showing Jonathan Owens, Simone Biles’ husband, donning her gold medal. Some users appear to have expressed disagreement with this action.
On Instagram, Jonathan Owans chose to honor his wife and her incredible Olympic success by sharing a heartfelt post. The caption for the post read, “Every time you step onto the mat, history is made. Congratulations my love, on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history!!! Incredible!! You earned 8 gold medals!!! So grateful I was there to witness it.” This post also included a photo of Jonathan Owans embracing Simone Biles while wearing her gold medal.

It’s quite astonishing that people are criticizing Jonathan Owens for wearing Simone Biles’ medal, considering how frequently Olympians share their medals with family members. In fact, Biles herself has been seen passing her medal around among her loved ones. Therefore, it seems strange that wearing the medal is a contentious issue when it appears she willingly gave it to him, rather than taking it forcefully.
Right now, it’s best for everyone to give Simone Biles some space. She hasn’t done anything to warrant such constant criticism, especially over trivial matters.
As a gamer, I can’t help but weigh in on this whole situation. From my perspective, it seems unusual to see Jonathan Owens posing with his wife’s military medal. While I understand that spouses often share achievements, the context and symbolism of military medals might make some people feel uncomfortable if not handled sensitively.
