Konami is making a strong comeback with Silent Hill, building upon the success of Bloober Team’s remake of the second game. Currently, they are developing a remake of the original game in the series. Unlike previous installments, this year’s Silent Hill F will be set in Showa Era Japan and is scheduled for release on PS5, PC, and Xbox. This brings the chilling American small-town horror to Japan during the Showa period.
Silent Hill F is a return to form
It’s been intriguing to some why the latest installment is situated in a Japanese village instead of the usual Silent Hill town, known for its grim depiction of the failed American ideal. Interestingly, it appears that the new game is intended to counterbalance this shift, with series producer Motoi Okamoto aiming to revive the authentic Japanese horror that the franchise has been missing since the PlayStation 2 era.
In his latest developer’s commentary on Silent Hill F, Okamoto highlighted that what made the horror series unique was its blend of Western horror elements with traditional Japanese horror, creating a chilling masterpiece. Nevertheless, Okamoto feels that this distinctive fusion seems to be missing now.
As the show unfolded, it seemed to me that the authentic Japanese horror atmosphere faded away,” the producer stated. “This sparked my ambition to develop a series that embodies 100% of the traditional Japanese horror spirit, similar to Silent Hill.
Over time, it’s clear that the Silent Hill franchise experienced some challenges, particularly from Origins to Downpour. During this period, the horror franchise seemed to prioritize its Western market over the original blend of cultures that defined it. The reboot, Shattered Memories, is a noticeable departure from the distinctly Japanese elements that fans cherish in the series.
Okamoto clarified that Silent Hill F isn’t merely focused on being as grotesque or terrifying as possible, although it certainly delivers on the ‘gnarly’ factor. For instance, a character’s face is brutally severed – quite unsettling. However, the producer emphasized that the fundamental concept of the game revolves around blending the elements of beauty and horror, a motif often found in traditional Japanese horror films such as Ju-On, Ringu, and even Hausu.
The distinctive feature of Japanese horror isn’t just the gruesome, but the harmony between the beautiful and the unsettling, as the producer explained. This production is being developed around the idea, ‘discovering beauty within fear’.
Although Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 revives the spirit of the series, it’s not a fresh installment in the horror franchise. It’s been quite some time since a truly remarkable new entry has emerged in the Silent Hill series. At this moment, Silent Hill F appears to be developing exceptionally well, and we eagerly await seeing how fantastic the final game turns out.
