Shuhei Yoshida claims Jim Ryan told him to take over PlayStation indies or leave the company

In November 2024, Shuhei Yoshida parted ways with PlayStation after a 31-year tenure, but he had initially planned to stay longer. As shared by Yoshida himself, Jim Ryan came close to pushing him out of PlayStation around the time when Ryan was taking over the group’s independent developer initiative.

In a recent conversation with GamesBeat, Shuhei Yoshida provided some insights into his experiences. Specifically, he discussed his enthusiasm for promoting independent games within the PlayStation library. However, transitioning into a leadership role for PlayStation indies was not without its challenges.

Are you an indie developer going to DICE to show a new, cool indie game to publishers?

Despite all challenges, Yoshida successfully implemented the shift towards indie games at PlayStation. From his appointment as head of indies in 2019 until his departure from the company in November 2024, he consistently emphasized and fostered the role of independent gaming on PlayStation. Even after leaving the company, Yoshida remains committed to backing indie game development.

Speaking of which, the independent gaming community may have benefited significantly from having Yoshuda on board at PlayStation. Even without PlayStation, his presence seems to have made a difference. If the latest State of Play is any clue, it’s clear that his influence lingers. We’ll keep you posted as we follow for more updates.
