Shruti Haasan Exclusive Interview on World Mental Health Day: ‘It's always someone else's problem until it becomes your own’

As a dedicated follower of Shruti Haasan, her insights into mental health and its challenges resonate deeply with me. Her journey, marked by openness and transparency, has been a beacon of hope for many who struggle with their own mental health issues. Her passion for music as a healing tool is truly inspiring, particularly her love for heavy metal which she describes as her meditation music.

Trigger warning: This article contains mentions of depression.

In a private interview with TopMob, Shruti Haasan stresses that music serves as more than just a profession for her; it’s a powerful means of healing and helps her maintain a strong connection to reality. Furthermore, the actress sharing insights from her role in Salaar, discusses the importance of mental health within the film industry, highlighting how our perspectives significantly shape our experiences.

Speaking from my perspective as a lifestyle expert, let me share an insight I gained: On the one hand, social media undeniably offers numerous benefits and connections. However, it’s equally important to acknowledge its potential downside – it can unquestionably trigger significant amounts of stress and anxiety.

Excerpts from the interview:

Have you often shared insights about mental health issues and their struggles? Is it your belief that music could serve as a therapeutic tool in addressing mental health challenges?

As an ardent music enthusiast, I firmly believe that melodies hold immense healing power. The diversity in music caters to every individual’s unique needs and preferences. Beyond this, there exists specialized music therapy, which plays a significant role in healing and maintaining mental health.

Could you share, from your perspective, some of the most common misunderstandings about mental health within the world of show business?

In various social circles and especially in the entertainment industry, talking openly about mental health struggles often carries a negative connotation, not because people are intentionally judgmental, but rather due to a lack of understanding about the significance of mental health in our society. Mental health issues are typically perceived as someone else’s problem until they directly impact an individual or their loved ones. It’s only then that people make an effort to learn about and appreciate the importance of the topic. In the entertainment world, where image is crucial, maintaining a certain public persona can sometimes lead to avoiding open discussions about mental health. However, my personal approach has always been one of transparency throughout my journey.

How do you envision contributing to the conversation around mental health in the future?

I plan to consistently discuss mental health, emphasizing its importance in conversations, because I believe this open dialogue is crucial for education and understanding. In the past, someone attempted to discredit my discussions on mental health, but I stood firm against it, stating, “Shaming people for discussing mental health is not acceptable. You can’t do it to me, and you can’t do it to anyone else.” It’s essential that we continue this dialogue until everyone is informed and aware of mental health issues.

What are your thoughts on the influence of social media and technology on people’s mental well-being, and how might we work towards creating a more mentally healthy digital space?

From my perspective as a lifestyle expert, I must admit that social media plays a significant role in shaping my understanding of the world and people’s experiences, particularly when it comes to mental health issues like stress, anxiety, depression, and more. It’s amazing how much valuable information I can gather from this platform, which seems to be tailored specifically for me.

To wrap it up, could you share a thought or sentiment that you’d like to express to your fans and the public as we mark World Mental Health Day?

On World Mental Health Day, I’d like to remind everyone it’s perfectly fine if you’re not feeling great. Showing kindness towards each other is crucial. If it’s a friend or family member, simply ask them, “How are you truly doing?” or “Is there something you’d like to share with me?” offering help when needed. Just acknowledging someone and letting them know you care can mean a lot. I don’t aim to lecture; I just want to emphasize the importance of being there for each other.
