Should You Pretend To Be A Mythic Dawn Agent During Dagon Shrine In Oblivion Remastered?

2025’s most memorable video gaming trip down memory lane is undoubtedly The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remaster, as it introduces cutting-edge graphics to the Cyrodiil region for the first time. The tale in Oblivion has always been legendary, and its main quest line offers some of the most enjoyable quests in RPG history.

In the ‘Dagon Shrine’ mission, you’ll be required to either sneak past or eliminate members of the Mythic Dawn cult residing in an underworld temple as part of an attempt to recover the crucial Amulet of Kings. Here is a guide on locating, initiating, and finishing the main story quest for Dagon Shrine in Oblivion Remastered.

How To Start Dagon Shrine And Which Approach To Take

Once you finish the primary mission ‘Weynon Priory’, you’ll seamlessly move on to ‘Dagon Shrine’. The conclusion of the previous quest reveals the location of the Dagon Shrine, hidden within the Lake Arrius Caverns in the eastern part of the map. As Cheydinhal is the closest significant township, it’s a smart idea to use fast travel and get there before you set out northward towards the caves.

When venturing into ‘Dagon Shrine’, you’ll find yourself with two strategies to consider. However, both options will demand considerable fighting to finish. If your inventory is light on potions and supplies before delving into the caves, it would be prudent to restock in Cheydinhal first. The path from Cheydinhal to Lake Arrius Caverns is relatively easy to navigate, and you’re unlikely to encounter formidable foes en route.

As you delve further into the depths of the caves, you will encounter a Mythic Dawn Gatekeeper at the entrance to the Dagon Shrine.

When you proceed deeper into the caverns, you’ll find yourself face-to-face with the Mythic Dawn Gatekeeper at the Dagon Shrine’s entrance.

The Aggressive Approach

Following a conversation with the Mythic Dawn Doorkeeper, you receive an invitation to venture into the caves and join their cult. Upon passing through the entrance doors, you’ll be confronted by Harrow who insists that you surrender your possessions for the ritual. If you opt for a bold response, this is when you can choose to resist twice and engage in a fight with Harrow. Should you defeat the Doorkeeper and continue into the caves.

In the upcoming chamber, you’ll stumble upon a few more followers of the Mythic Dawn. Do make sure to delve into every cave and gather any precious items that catch your eye. Feel free to spend as much time here as needed, since what transpires in the temple later won’t be influenced by your actions.

In the main temple room, Mankar Camoran will be delivering a sermon to his congregation at the altar. As you draw near, these Mythic Dawn members will spot you and aggressively attack. Just a heads up, Mankar Camoran will vanish to the Paradise Realm once the assault begins.

Regardless of your speed, you can’t prevent Mankar Camoran from vanishing. Therefore, avoid making a futile attempt to catch up with him. In fact, should you succeed in attacking him, it will have no effect as he won’t sustain any harm.

Overpower the Mythic Dawn followers and make your way towards the altar. There, you’ll find an Algorian Priest named Jeelius, who is bound and located at the rear of the altar. You have the option to release him from his bonds.

It might be beneficial to set him free since you’ll meet him again, and a long-term improvement in your stats will occur when conversing with him. Afterward, make your way towards the altar’s front, where you’ll come across the “Mysterium Xerxes” book. This item could be useful later in the game, and you’ll require it to progress the quest.

I’m sorry for any inconvenience, but the path you used to enter the caves is now blocked since fighting triggers an automatic lock. Instead, make your way towards the Living Quarters, which are teeming with Mythic Dawn members waiting to be defeated. Remember, just like before, take your time here and gather as much loot as possible.

Exiting the caves is quite simple, but there are a couple of steps involved. Firstly, you’ll have to eliminate a particular member from the Mythic Dawn group to acquire the key needed to unlock the exit. Secondly, there’s a gate that can be opened by turning a handle.

After leaving the caves, quickly teleport to Cloud Ruler Temple. Upon entering, Jauffre will approach you. He’ll instruct you to speak with Martin promptly once you’ve located him. Martin is situated within the main structure directly in front of you; deliver the Mysterium Xerxes to him. Martin will express concerns about your handling the book and plans to analyze it to potentially recover the Amulet of Kings.

At this juncture, construction on Dagon Shrine will be finished, automatically triggering your new primary narrative mission titled ‘Spies’.

The Stealth Approach

An alternative strategy for retrieving the Amulet of Kings is to disguise yourself as a potential member of the Mythic Dawn. This approach requires you to give your belongings to Harrow, and instead of storming the gathering, you attend it and listen to Mankar Camoran’s sermon. Once he transports to the Paradise Realm, you are summoned to the altar for the completion of your initiation into the Mythic Dawn.

In the course of this ritual, it’s compulsory that you grab a sacred knife and slay Jeelius. Should you opt out or refuse to kill him, the Mythic Dawn followers will assault you. If you comply and indeed slay Jeelius, then the subsequent action involves acquiring the Mysterium Xarxes, and even in this case, the cult members will still attack you. Regrettably, there’s no means of obtaining the book without instigating a fight with the Mythic Dawn; combat will ensue at this juncture, regardless of your stealthiness.

To ensure Jeelius’ survival, it would be wise to liberate him following the elimination of the Mythic Dawn members within the temple. Once released, he is likely to charge through the Mythic Dawn ranks, possibly leading to his demise if not properly protected or escorted away.

As a stealth-focused gamer here, let me tell you that choosing the covert route isn’t much different from the all-out combat strategy I mentioned earlier. But remember, unlike before, there won’t be any weapons, armor, potions, or other gear in your inventory to help you out. Instead, you’ll have to take down Harrow and scavenge his remains to reclaim your loot. This can prove quite challenging as a dozen or so Mythic Dawn members will swarm you at once!

Which Approach Is Better?

As a gamer navigating ‘Dagon Shrine’, I’ve come to realize that going stealthy isn’t the most effective strategy when trying to retrieve the Amulet of Kings. Here’s the thing, you can’t loot the amulet from Mankar Camoran, and he’ll teleport before you can take him down. So, regardless of your actions, he’ll be taking that amulet with him. However, opting for a louder approach comes with its own benefits – you’ll keep all your gear throughout the encounter, saving you from having to deal with Harrow again to get it back.

Absolutely, if your character’s skills lean more towards stealth, by all means, choose that path. However, it is essential to note that progressing through ‘Dagon Shrine’ requires eliminating certain members of the Mythic Dawn who reside within a cave. Additionally, during this encounter, some enemies must be defeated using a dagger, and doing so without armor is also necessary.
