Shemar Moore and Justin Hartley talk Young and the Restless and Kristoff St. John

As a long-time fan of daytime dramas and prime-time television, I found the conversation between Shemar Moore and Justin Hartley during CBS’ “Conversations Between Stars” truly captivating. Their shared history on The Young and the Restless, though not simultaneous, provided a unique perspective into their respective journeys in the world of acting.

CBS’ promotional series titled “Conversations Among Celebrities” has led to some entertaining and intriguing discussions, as the network opts for an “Actors Interviewing Actors” format to captivate viewers. Notably, Kathy Bates from Matlock and Carrie Preston of Elsbeth engaged in one such exchange, and more recently, Shemar Moore from S.W.A.T. and Justin Hartley of Tracker have shared a talk that explored their past roles in soap operas.

It’s worth mentioning that both actors had roles on the TV show “The Young and the Restless” in the past, but they didn’t appear together on the daytime drama because their tenures weren’t simultaneous. Moore began his professional acting career with this soap opera; he joined the cast in 1994. His character was Malcolm Winters, Neil Winter’s brother. During a recent interview, Moore expressed gratitude for the advice provided by the late Kristoff St. John during his time on the show.

I celebrated and then I was like ‘Holy smokes, what am I going to do now? I don’t even know if I’m good at this.’ and all that. With that fear, I walked into the fear because my mother always told me, ‘Leap and it will appear.’ I went on the show and I just tried. I was scared to death but Kristoff St. John, who played my older brother Neil Winters, he was the dude on that show. And I had watched him, my friends in college had watched him and he just embraced me–figuratively and literally–and said, “You’re green, but I got you. It’s going to take time but you’re going to learn and you’re going to be great.

It’s true that St. John was spot-on, and Moore truly shone during his time on the show. He even received a Daytime Emmy in 2000 for his outstanding performance. The audience has continued to admire him, and he left “The Young and the Restless” in 2005. However, his career didn’t end there – he went on to play the memorable role of Derek Morgan on “Criminal Minds.” Despite leaving Genoa City behind, Moore occasionally returned for guest appearances, with his most recent visit being last year when the family gathered at Neil’s Jazz lounge to pay their respects.

Although Hartley hadn’t known St. John as well as Moore, having only worked with him, Hartley concurred with Moore’s assessment of the actor being a “wonderful spirit.” This was in 2014 when Hartley debuted on the soap opera, taking on the enigmatic role of Gabriel, who turned out to be Adam Newman. The character had undergone multiple surgeries following a severe car accident, which explained his changed appearance since fans were accustomed to Michael Muhney, who’d played the part for five years before being unexpectedly dismissed from the series.

Moore playfully labeled Hartley as belonging to “the distinguished lineage,” which indeed holds true. Among the numerous outstanding families depicted on The Young and the Restless, the Newmans stand out as the wealthiest and most infamous, largely due to their patriarch Victor Newman, Adam’s father, who is both a relentless business magnate and cunning manipulator, even towards his own children.

Hartley earned a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2016 for his work but left the show after two years to star in This is Us, the hit NBC drama where he played Kevin Pearson. Watch the full “Conversations Between Stars” talk between the stars below where Moore gives Hartley advice on being ‘the man’ aka the lead of a series, they discuss what it’s like to be a producer and secret talents.
