Zachary Levi is getting honest with his thoughts on the possibility of another Shazam! movie.
In a highly-acclaimed 2019 film called Shazam!, the actor first appeared as the DC superhero, marking his entrance into this universe of DC movies. Regrettably, the sequel released in 2023, titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods, received harsh criticism from critics and underperformed at the global box office, raising questions about the future of the series.
What did Zachary Levi say about his future as Shazam?
Levi expressed his readiness to reprise his role as Shazam for a standalone movie within James Gunn’s DC Universe. “Definitely,” he said, expressing his enjoyment of the character. However, he mentioned that he wasn’t clear about the plans for Shazam! in the DCU, acknowledging that it was beyond his authority to decide.
Although Levi appears eager to resume his role as Shazam in the DC Universe, it appears that his return as the superhero might not happen due to Gunn’s statement suggesting that many of the main DCEU cast members won’t reprise their roles for the new shared universe. For instance, Jason Momoa portrayed Aquaman in the DCEU but will be introducing Lobo, an alien bounty hunter, in the DCU starting with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
To date, DC Studios hasn’t revealed any upcoming Shazam! projects within the DC Universe. Given that the primary figures from the DCEU still haven’t had their futures in the DCU revealed, this isn’t entirely unexpected. Characters like Wonder Woman, portrayed by Gal Gadot in the DCEU, are among those whose future plans for the DCU remain undisclosed. However, James Gunn has hinted that a new Wonder Woman project is being developed for the DCU, but it’s not ready to be unveiled publicly just yet.
Right now, you can stream Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods on Max. Meanwhile, the first film in the DC Universe, Superman, will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
