As a long-time gamer and Marvel enthusiast with a soft spot for X-Men characters, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions when reflecting on Channing Tatum’s journey to portray Gambit. It’s like watching a rollercoaster ride that never seems to end, with twists and turns at every corner.
Previously, Shawn Levy had been thought of as a potential director for the Gambit film featuring Channing Tatum.
What did Shawn Levy say about Channing Tatum’s Gambit Movie?
During a special discussion about Deadpool and Wolverine, director Levy shared that he was among several filmmakers considered for directing Gambit. Unfortunately, the project didn’t come together as planned, but Levy felt satisfied when Taylor Kitsch portrayed the X-Men character in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Approximately eight to ten years ago, I was among approximately 40 directors who had a meeting with Channing about directing the Gambit movie. Unfortunately, none of us landed that role and the film never came to fruition. However, when I saw him take on this role recently, it became clear that he’d been preparing for it his entire life – it was like watching a mind-blowing magic trick unfold right before my eyes.
Initially, Tatum had been considered for the role of Gambit in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But ultimately, it was Taylor Kitsch who took on the part of the mutant who uses cards, as Tatum faced scheduling issues.

2014 saw Tatum being confirmed to play the lead role in a movie based on Gambit. However, due to various hurdles and changes in directors such as Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski, the film found itself stuck in production limbo. The final blow came when Disney bought 21st Century Fox, leading to the official cancellation of Gambit in May 2019.
Tatum remembers having numerous meetings with Levy regarding the Gambit film. However, when the director suggested that Tatum play roles in Deadpool and Wolverine, Tatum was taken aback.
Shawn and I had discussions about potentially directing Gambit when it was under Fox’s control, according to Tatum. Later on, they reached out to me about this project, and I was absolutely taken aback. I honestly thought they might be messing with me or pulling my leg.
One of the standout scenes from Deadpool & Wolverine was when Tatum portrayed Gambit, a fact that Marvel reportedly finds themselves extremely drawn to, as evidenced by Ryan Reynolds’ subsequent revelation.
In simpler terms, Reynolds admitted that he’s unsure about the specifics of Marvel’s bookkeeping meetings, but he’s certain they appreciate a particular role. It’s similar to his own experience. Once a concept proves successful, that seems to be what they’re looking for. Sometimes, they just need to see it in action.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now streaming on Disney+.
