As a die-hard “Star Wars” enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that it’s officially confirmed: yours truly, Ryan Gosling, will be at the helm for an exciting new chapter in the Star Wars saga, titled “Star Wars: Starfighter.” This epic adventure is under the skilled direction of Shawn Levy. Production is slated to kick off this fall, with a theatrical release date set by Disney for May 28, 2027. I can hardly wait!
Following many rumors about Gosling and Levy’s involvement with a “Star Wars” production, Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, and Dave Filoni, the chief creative officer, finally announced their plans for a new project titled “Starfighter” at the yearly Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo on Friday.

This upcoming “Star Wars” production, featuring fresh characters, is approximately five years post the occurrences in “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker,” marking the end of the Skywalker saga and currently serving as the latest event on the “Star Wars” timeline. At this point, no additional casting information has been disclosed.
It has been confirmed that actress Mikey Madison will not make an appearance. Contrary to expectations following her Best Actress Oscar win, she won’t venture into a distant galaxy for what would be her first post-Oscar project. According to Variety, discussions about her role have ceased after an offer was extended.
Previously mentioned, Jonathan Tropper, known for scripts like “This Is Where I Leave You” and “The Adam Project”, has been penning the script for this upcoming movie. Levy has been working on this project since late 2022 and is not only responsible for its development but also producing it under his 21 Laps production company, in collaboration with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
The movie titled “Starfighter” is set to premiere about a year after the theater release of “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” which is an extended version of the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian.” This film has already wrapped up its main production and will hit theaters on May 22, 2026. Notably, it will be the first “Star Wars” movie since “The Rise of Skywalker” was shown in December 2019.
The movie isn’t linked to the Skywalker Saga, which ended with “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019. For now, other plot details are frozen in carbonite, but we do know its release date: May 28, 2027.
