Shailene Woodley to Star in Janis Joplin Biopic, Issues Statement

As a longtime fan of both Shailene Woodley and the unforgettable Janis Joplin, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation for this upcoming biopic! With her exceptional acting skills, Shailene has consistently demonstrated the ability to bring complex characters to life on screen.

Actress Shailene Woodley, known for her roles in The Divergent film series and Big Little Lies, will take on the lead role in a biographical movie about Janis Joplin.

The upcoming biographical movie, focusing on the life and impact of American rock legend Janis Joplin, has been granted a $2.5 million investment by the California Film Commission.

Woodley will also produce the film in addition to starring.

What did Shailene Woodley say about the Janis Joplin biopic?

In a statement, Woodley conveyed that “California held immense significance for Janis Joplin – from the steps of San Francisco to the soundboards at Sunset Sound, the state served as the platform where she delved into not only the realm of music, but also the world reflecting her vivid humanity.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that not only is the Janis Joplin biopic being funded, but the California Film Commission has also bestowed a $12 million grant on Suits L.A., enabling them to shoot the series right here in my hometown, Los Angeles!

Woodley has made a name for herself by portraying notable characters such as Hazel Grace Lancaster in The Fault in Our Stars and Beatrice “Tris” Prior in the Divergent Series (Divergent, Insurgent, Allegiant). Additionally, she has appeared in various other films including The Descendants, White Bird in a Blizzard, Snowden, Adrift, The Mauritanian, The Fallout, The Last Letter from Your Lover, To Catch a Killer, Robots, Ferrari, and Dumb Money.

On TV, Woodley played Jane Chapman in Big Little Lies and Gia Lombardi in Three Women, among other roles.

During her time, Janis Joplin – a highly influential and recognized rock star from that era – was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She is renowned for her hit songs such as “Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)”, “Get It While You Can”, “Move Over”, “Down on Me”, “Cry Baby”, “Kozmic Blues”, “Ball and Chain”, “Summertime”, “Piece of My Heart”, and “Me and Bobby McGee” – just to name a few.

Other details about the biopic remain under wraps.
