Shadow of the Colossus Movie Gets Exciting Update From Director

Discussions regarding a Shadow of the Colossus movie have been circulating since the end of the 2000s. Over the years, there hasn’t been much progress on the film, leading many fans to believe that it was stuck in development purgatory. However, Andy Muschietti, who has been connected to the project as a director since 2014, recently provided encouraging updates about its production in an interview.

Andy Muschietti’s Shadow of the Colossus movie was never abandoned

Despite initial reports from 2014 suggesting that Andy Muschietti, who later directed the hit It movies, was to direct Shadow of the Colossus for Sony Pictures, there hasn’t been much news about the project since then. However, Muschietti recently revealed in an interview with Radio TU that the movie is still being worked on.

In the interview, Muschietti admitted that he isn’t particularly into gaming but considers Shadow of the Colossus an exceptional masterpiece. He shared that he’s played it multiple times. Furthermore, he hinted at a more promising chance for the movie adaptation in the current scenario.

Muschietti clarified that the movie wasn’t abandoned but rather put on hold, sharing that he had previously found an appealing script. He didn’t specify the exact reason for the delay, but hinted that the studio’s interest in a specific intellectual property and its current popularity were key factors influencing the production timeline.

Back in 2005, Sony Computer Entertainment launched the action-adventure game “Shadow of the Colossus” for PlayStation 2. This game is centered around a character named Wander, who embarks on a journey through barren and taboo ruins to retrieve powers with the aim of resurrecting someone dear to him. Recognized as one of the greatest and most impactful video games ever made, “Shadow of the Colossus” was met with critical acclaim, won multiple awards, and achieved commercial success.

Muschietti emphasized his perspective by referring to Shadow of the Colossus as a “highly popular game” and suggesting that production studios determine budgets for projects like this based on their own metrics. He noted that studios can allocate anything from “$200 million, $150 million, or even $100 million,” and expressed his desire to produce the movie with a budget of $200 million.
