Shacknews presents 'Dreamcast: 25 Years of Thinking' documentary

As a gamer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the Sega Dreamcast was not just a console, but a revolution in gaming. Its 25th anniversary is a significant milestone, and I’m thrilled to see Shacknews celebrating it in such an engaging way.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Sega Dreamcast, and Shacknews is commemorating this milestone in a special way. You’ll find it featured in our Shacknews Hall of Fame Class of 2024 this fall. Additionally, we’ve produced a documentary to reminisce about some of its outstanding games, memorable moments, and the factors that led to its early demise.

25 Years of Reflection: Shacknews Staff Members Asif Khan, Greg Burke, and TJ Denzer share intimate interviews about their experiences during the Dreamcast era, discussing the unique charm that characterized the console’s poignant run within the gaming industry.

In this documentary, our team recalls classic games like SoulCalibur, a title that was instrumental in selling systems and marking the beginning of the post-arcade era. Jet Set Radio, on the other hand, embodies what TJ Denzer refers to as the punk-rock phase of gaming, with its rebellious soundtrack and gameplay. Games such as Seaman, Space Channel 5, and others are also highlighted for their contributions.

Additionally, we delve into the impact Sony’s PlayStation 2 had on Sega Dreamcast’s downfall, before moving on to discuss the views of Greg Burke and others who think the Dreamcast deserves warm remembrance—and why a mini Dreamcast console could be an ideal revival.
