As a long-time F-Zero fan since the days of the SNES, I can confidently say that F-Zero 99 has been nothing short of a dream come true. This game took me back to my childhood and made me feel like I was racing through space for the first time all over again.
2023 saw the unexpected debut of F-Zero 99, a game that sent shockwaves through the F-Zero community. From its initial release, the game was flawlessly polished, and Nintendo continued to support it by regularly releasing updates. Each update brought fresh content, enhancing an already exceptional gaming experience rated at 10 out of 10.
Starting promptly in October 2023, Nintendo began providing regular updates for F-Zero 99, with the first patch arriving just a few months after launch. This was followed by new content additions in November, and since then, there’s been at least one update each month, with only a couple of exceptions in 2024.
The iconic game F-Zero introduced a timeless mode, reminiscent of the original SNES version, that supports races involving twenty competitors. This mode, known as Classic Mode, also includes fresh leagues and competitions for gamers to engage in, such as the Classic Mini Prix, Festival Queen League, weekend events, and many more exciting additions.
Nintendo has incorporated fresh tracks, hidden tracks, reversed tracks, and redesigned obstacles in some, along with tracks that players assumed would remain unseen. One of the latest assortments includes the legendary Ace League Satellaview Tracks set, featuring Mute City 4, Sand Storm 1, Sand Storm 2, Big Blue 2, and Silence 2 – tracks that were previously believed to be lost forever.
In terms of personalization, gamers were given fresh opportunities to showcase their individuality. F-Zero 99 incorporated features such as backdrops, badges, and borders to customize the Pilot Cards of players. After this update, Nintendo regularly introduced new badges for players to acquire, along with options for boost colors, spin effects, emotes, decals, and additional elements.
As an ardent fan, I can’t help but appreciate the depth that F-Zero 99 brought to the table. It wasn’t just about the stunning visuals; it was the core systems that truly amplified the gaming experience for me. For instance, the ability to create Private Lobbies where I could race against friends and still earn Experience Points, albeit at a slightly reduced rate, added a whole new level of excitement.
It’s challenging to express enough how much affection Nintendo has demonstrated towards F-Zero 99 within its initial year on the Nintendo Switch. Although there were several other deserving candidates in this competition, F-Zero 99 emerged victorious, claiming the title of Shacknews Most Improved Game of 2024.
