Shacknews Best VR Game of 2024 – Batman: Arkham Shadow

As a die-hard Batman Arkham series fan who’s been through the trials and tribulations of countless VR adaptations that have left me more frustrated than the Joker himself, I must admit, Batman: Arkham Shadow was an absolute game-changer in 2024. It wasn’t just a tech demo; it was a testament to what VR could do when handled with care and passion.

2024, as a dedicated Batman Arkham series fan, I must admit I approached Batman: Arkham Shadow with a touch of skepticism, given that most VR adaptations of classic gaming franchises often feel more like quick tech demos than fully-fledged games. Yet, to my delight, Arkham Shadow proved to be one of the most unexpectedly satisfying video game releases of 2024.

In Batman: Arkham Shadow, developer Camouflaj skillfully adapts what makes the Arkham series distinctive for the VR experience. Features like Detective Vision, stealth, and combat not only feel rewarding in Arkham Shadow, but they’re amplified by the capabilities of virtual reality.

Activating Detective Vision by tapping the side of my cowl and meticulously examining an area for clues gave the player a sense of being the World’s Greatest Sleuth, making the game experience feel more realistic. To surprise an adversary, I had to remove a grate, crawl into it, and assume a crouching position in my living room while carefully maneuvering myself for a stealth attack on unsuspecting hoodlums. In combat, I was able to launch a rapid series of attacks on enemies, swiftly evading incoming blows and throwing Batarangs.

Beyond offering exceptional gameplay mechanics in Batman: Arkham Shadow, the game also presents an exclusive narrative that seamlessly fits within the Arkham universe, enriching the folklore of Gotham City by shedding light on its key figures through a captivating mystery revolving around the city’s underworld crime network.
