As a lifelong gamer with a soft spot for Sega and its legendary titles, I must say that 2024 was nothing short of a miracle year for the company. From the moment Ryu Ga Gotoku dropped the explosive Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, I knew we were in for a wild ride. The nostalgia-inducing Super Monkey Ball on Switch was the cherry on top of an already impressive cake. And let’s not forget Persona 3: Reload and Metaphor: ReFantazio from Atlus, which had me hooked from start to finish. VanillaWare’s Unicorn Overlord was a masterpiece that I couldn’t put down, and it just goes to show the depth of talent within Sega’s ranks.
The future looks bright for Sega as well. With Sonic’s growing media universe, new Virtua Fighter and Yakuza games on the horizon, and rumors swirling about a potential Sega Super Game, it feels like we’re living in the golden age of Sega once again. I can only hope that the company continues to push the boundaries of gaming and deliver the high-quality experiences we’ve come to expect from them.
And let’s not forget to mention that even if they somehow managed to lose their way, they still have a secret weapon up their sleeve – the infamous Sega Crazy Taxi remastered for modern consoles. Just imagine the hilarity of being able to pick up fares in 2025 while driving a self-driving car… talk about meta!
In most cases, it’s rare for a company to release over five top-tier games in a year and have them resonate with different audiences, but Sega managed to achieve this remarkable feat. Although Sega also released Sonic X Shadow: Generations as their own title, they still succeeded in publishing a series of games that frequently appear on our annual Shacknews Awards list for 2024.
Beginning with Ryu Ga Gotoku, creators of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, their work has been nothing short of remarkable. Not only did they release an innovative new Like a Dragon game titled Infinite Wealth, but they also contributed significantly to Sega’s development of a fresh Super Monkey Ball game for the Nintendo Switch, which turned out to be quite enjoyable. To add to that, Ryu Ga Gotoku is already working on Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, set for release in February 2025, and subsequent plans include Virtua Fighter. This demonstrates an impressive range of projects from a single studio.
2024 was undeniably Atlus’ year, and I couldn’t help but marvel at their accomplishments! Persona 3: Reload alone would have earned them a round of applause, but the cherry on top was when Studio Zero, a team within Atlus, released Metaphor: ReFantazio – a game that made it onto many Game of the Year lists and even snatched a few awards here at Shacknews. It’s not surprising to see Sega’s lesser-known gem, VanillaWare, also shining bright with Unicorn Overlord. This incredible strategy RPG was another fantastic addition to an already stellar year for gaming.
2024 proved to be a series of successes for Sega, with one hit game after another bearing their iconic banner. The excitement surrounding the Sonic universe, not just in gaming but also its expanding cinematic and media presence, is palpable. Additionally, new installments of Virtua Fighter and Yakuza are on the horizon. While the long-rumored Sega Super Game remains speculation, even without it, 2024 was a remarkable year for Sega, and it shows no signs of slowing down in 2025.
