As a lifelong PlayStation enthusiast with a soft spot for platformers, I can confidently say that Astro Bot is the standout game of 2024 for me. Coming from someone who’s been through countless generations of gaming consoles and played my fair share of platform games, Astro Bot showcases the unparalleled charm and innovation that only Team Asobi can deliver.
The game’s level design is a breathtaking journey through galaxies filled with intricate gimmicks that make every stage a joy to play. From shrinking down to mouse size to navigate a miniature world, to climbing a singing tree while boxing pirates, the gameplay in Astro Bot is a delightful medley of platforming design’s greatest hits.
2024 feature, but for now, I’m off to conquer more galaxies with my new favorite robot buddy, Astro. See you in the next level, folks! (Pun intended)
If Sony (the company behind PlayStation) is still searching for a new emblem to represent their brand moving forward, then Team Asobi has subtly hinted at this with their latest game in the Astro Bot series, simply named Astro Bot. This charming little robot showcases an impressive display of Team Asobi’s abilities in platforming gameplay, level design, music, and a remarkable understanding of how to maximize the potential of a PlayStation 5.
Regardless of whether Astro Bot is exclusive to PS5 or not, it remains an outstanding platformer. In your quest to recover Astro’s friends and mend their ship (remarkably shaped like a PS5), you traverse stunning levels filled with innovative features that make gameplay an absolute pleasure. You can shrink down to the size of a mouse to navigate a miniature world, scale a tree that sings as you climb it, or punch your way through a pirate hideout using boxing gloves, among other engaging gameplay mechanics. Astro Bot draws from a rich collection of platformer design’s most celebrated elements, making for an enjoyable experience.
Astro Bot on PS5 stands out due to Asobi’s exceptional ability to integrate the unique capabilities of the PS5 into its gameplay. Throughout the game, you’ll utilize the DualSense controller’s motion controls, adaptive triggers, touch pad, and microphone to tackle a diverse range of challenges. Few developers use PlayStation’s hardware and tools as creatively as Asobi does. It’s worth noting that even if you’re not a fan of the DualSense, they’ve made provisions for playing with other controllers, a thoughtful touch for those of us who prefer alternative gamepads (and this also opens the door for a potential PC port, wink wink)).
2024 saw an abundance of games thriving on the PS5. Many of these games are worthy of recognition and have found it elsewhere. However, when it comes to creating a game exclusively for Sony, only a few developers can match the skill of Asobi. Kudos, PlayStation! Your new mascot is quite captivating and could very well become the focal point of your collection for some time to come. I hope Sony makes the most of this character, but we’ll take what we have for now. Astro Bot is nothing short of spectacular.
