It appears that there’s been an update regarding the planned Sgt. Rock DC Universe movie. In a recent announcement, DC Studios co-head James Gunn shared some disheartening news about the movie’s original director.
What is the latest Sgt. Rock update?
During his latest chat on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast with Josh Horowitz, Gunn discussed the current standing of Sgt. Rock. He disclosed that Luca Guadagnino would no longer be involved in the movie’s direction, yet this does not necessarily signal the end of the project.
Gunn expressed great enthusiasm about the possibility of the film coming back quickly, saying, ‘I’m genuinely thrilled about Sgt. Rock.’
The journey of a Sgt. Rock DCU film has been quite turbulent. Originally announced back in 2024, the movie had Academy Award-nominated director Guadagnino attached, with Justin Kuritzkes penning the script. In the same year, news broke that Daniel Craig was set for the lead role. However, it was revealed early in 2025 that Craig never agreed to the part, and instead, Colin Farrell was the one being considered for the leading role.
The movie’s situation worsened further as production seemingly stopped in April, according to recent reports. At this point, it’s uncertain about its status, but when Sgt. Rock resumes production, they will need to appoint a new director to take charge of the film set.
Originating from the minds of Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, this character is portrayed as a hardened commander leading Easy Company, a military unit engaged in battles against Nazi forces across Europe.
