Sgt. Rock: Daniel Craig Drops Out of DCU Movie, Replacement Possibly Revealed

Daniel Craig and filmmaker Luca Guadagnino will no longer work together on the DC Universe film “Sgt. Rock.” (The collaboration between Daniel Craig and Luca Guadagnino for the DC Universe film “Sgt. Rock” has been canceled.)

As reported by THR, it appears that Craig has decided not to take part in the upcoming film. The actor who was once Bond in films produced by Eon Productions, recently played a role in Guadagnino’s Queer, distributed by A24. Although there was some initial excitement and award speculation, the movie didn’t seem to gain much momentum. According to the source, Craig may have lost interest in the part because of Queer’s underwhelming critical and box office reception, as well as scheduling conflicts with his wife, Rachel Weisz.

What is the current status of Sgt. Rock?

In November 2024, there were rumors that an agreement hadn’t been finalized yet, but the actor was expected to be cast in an upcoming DC Studios project, which could potentially be Guadagnino’s next film. As of now, production is scheduled for this summer. Jeremy Allen White from “The Bear” has been suggested as a potential replacement, though no official decision has been made.

The screenplay for the Sgt. Rock film has been penned by Justin Kuritzkes, who previously authored Challengers and Queer. As of now, no additional details regarding casting or plot are disclosed.

Originating from the creative minds of Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, the character Sergeant Rock debuted in issue #83 of Our Army at War published by DC Comics back in 1959. This notable figure is a World War II soldier distinguished for his exceptional combat abilities, remarkable accuracy, unflappable temperament, and many other traits. Most recently, Evil Dead actor Bruce Campbell penned a Sgt. Rock limited series titled “Sgt. Rock vs. the Army of the Dead,” which made its debut at DC Comics in September 2022.
