Sgt. Rock Canceled: Colin Farrell DCU Movie Shuts Down

The Sgt. Rock movie being made for DC Studios has been canceled.

Earlier reports suggested that Luca Guadagnino would direct a DCU movie featuring Sgt. Rock, with Daniel Craig rumored for the main role. However, it was recently announced that Craig is not involved in the project. Instead, negotiations are underway for Colin Farrell to star as Sgt. Rock in the film.

At DC Studios and Warner Bros., the project was being prepared for filming, with intentions to shoot it in England. Unfortunately, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this project appears to have been halted.

Why was the DCU Sgt. Rock movie canceled?

At the moment, it’s still not understood why Sgt. Rock was taken off the schedule by DC Studios. They declined to comment on the matter when approached by The Hollywood Reporter.

According to an insider, the decision ultimately hinged on the project’s requirement for outdoor filming. The insider added that the project wouldn’t be cancelled, but would be reviewed towards the end of the year for a potential summer shoot in 2026. Another source mentioned a concern that Guadagnino lacks experience in action films. Despite the budget being around $70 million, which is relatively low for comic book movies, there may have been doubts about the executives’ confidence in this project due to its genre.

The article states that Mike Faist, who has collaborated with Guadagnino before on the film “Challengers,” was reportedly slated to appear in the upcoming production of “Sgt. Rock.” Additionally, it mentions that there was a role for a French female resistance fighter that had been assigned as well.

The article continues, “Despite being set during World War II, the narrative is reported to feature Rock joining forces with a female member of the French resistance (what other kind might there be?), in search of the legendary Spear of Destiny. This spear, as legend has it, was used to pierce Jesus Christ on the cross and rumored to possess extraordinary powers. However, the Nazis are said to be eager to seize it first.

Initially, Sgt. Rock wasn’t involved in the DC Universe projects that James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled upon their appointment as co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios. However, Safran mentioned in February 2025 via Deadline about the project, “We’re excited about Sgt. Rock because it offers a chance to narrate a tale of heroism and conflict in an engaging and distinctive manner. Justin [Kuritzkes] penned a fantastic screenplay, which is what really brought that project to the spotlight.
