It has been confirmed by BioWare team members that their employment with Electronic Arts (EA) has come to an end. Previously, it was announced that EA wouldn’t require “full studio support” for Mass Effect 5, and some staff members would be reassigned within the company. However, recent reports suggest that these staff members are no longer employed by either BioWare or EA.
Yesterday, I announced my departure from BioWare through social media, following the news that broke out earlier. For over two decades, I’ve been a writer at this incredible studio, contributing to iconic games like the original Mass Effect and all the way up to Mass Effect 5. It seems my journey with BioWare has come to an end.
I also learned that Karin West-Weekes, who served as an editor for 19 years at BioWare, is leaving too. Alongside her, Ryan Cormier, a longtime editor and writer, and Producer Jen Cheverie, who’s been with the studio for 14 years, are also saying goodbye.
According to PC Gamer, Daniel Steed (editor), Lina Anderson (senior product manager), Michael Flamm (systems designer), and Mad Bee (UX designer) have also decided to leave BioWare. It’s a bittersweet moment for us as we bid farewell to the studio that shaped our gaming experiences.
As a storyteller who has had the honor to collaborate with countless talented developers for two decades at BioWare, I am now embarking on a new journey in my writing/narrative career. The friendships and memories I’ve forged with the incredible community members I’ve met will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thank you all for being part of this incredible adventure!

On Tuesday, January 29, 2025, Electronic Arts initially discussed Mass Effect 5 and BioWare’s situation. During this conversation, BioWare’s General Manager Gary McKay stated that “we don’t need assistance from the entire studio. We have an abundance of skilled professionals here at BioWare, so we have been actively placing many of our team members with other EA teams who had suitable vacancies.
Despite McKay and EA not mentioning layoffs or reduction in workforce during the initial statement, it appears that key details might have been omitted at the time. It’s also important to note that the Dragon Age: Veilguard director, Corinne Busche, recently departed from the studio. Nonetheless, both EA and BioWare claim they possess the workforce required for Mass Effect 5 development. As we eagerly anticipate future developments regarding BioWare, keep a close eye on Shacknews for more updates.
