Seth Gilliam's new movie The Lady of the Lake coming to VOD in August

As a huge fan of both Seth Gilliam’s acting and Long Island folklore, I’m thrilled to see him take on a new role in “The Lady of the Lake.” Having grown up near Long Island myself, I’ve always been fascinated by the legends surrounding its bodies of water, especially the enigmatic Lake Ronkonkoma.

Seth Gilliam, known for his role as Father Gabriel Stokes in “The Walking Dead,” has landed his next acting gig. This summer, look out for him in the upcoming film, titled “The Lady of the Lake.”

As a dedicated film enthusiast and critic with years of experience under my belt, I have had the pleasure of attending numerous film festivals and screenings. The buzz around town about “The Lady of the Lake” has truly piqued my curiosity. Written, directed, and produced by the talented Maria Capp, this psychological thriller promises to be a captivating experience.

In her hometown of Ronkonkoma, New York, situated in Suffolk County, Capp – a local native – produced the film. The narrative draws inspiration from an ancient Native American legend about the Lake Ronkonkoma Princess, serving as the movie’s captivating backdrop.

Lake Ronkonkoma legend

Long Island’s largest and deepest lake, Lake Ronkonkoma, holds a rich Native American legend. According to various accounts, Princess Ronkonkoma, a member of the Setauket tribe’s royalty, fell in love with a man disapproved by her father, the tribal chief. The heartbroken princess is said to have taken her own life by drowning in the lake’s center. The myth goes on to describe how she claims a young man’s life annually, either seeking vengeance for her lover’s death or searching for a new companion in the afterlife. This seemingly far-fetched belief gains credence due to the consistent occurrence of young men drowning in the lake for generations.

Lady of the Lake movie

The Schultz family film depicts how they deal with the solemn anniversary of losing a cherished family member, as Jamie prepares for her 18th birthday at the supposedly haunted lake with her friends. However, her father’s absence and mother’s mental health struggles cast a dark shadow over her celebrations.

Lady of the Lake cast

Nia Sioux takes on the role of Jamie Schultz, with Seth Gilliam acting as her on-screen father Adam. Sera-Lys McArthur joins the cast as Jamie’s mother Mia. The ensemble also includes Emery Kelly, Larry Saperstein, Del Zamora, Steven Thomas Capp, Julie Dove, Clio Contogenis, Veronica Kelly, and newcomer Taylor Red Fox portraying Tahoma. Raffaela Capp and Natasha Capp are cast as Jamie’s sisters, while Chris Roach and Tori London complete the lineup of additional cast members.

In the year 2023, Capp and Gilliam appeared as guests on “The Donna Drake Show: Live it Up.” During this broadcast, they spoke at length about the movie in question. It was during the pandemic lockdown that Capp penned the script, finding solace and inspiration at her family’s Lake Ronkonkoma residence. Her childhood recollections and the legend served as her muse, shaping what Gilliam refers to as a heartwarming coming-of-age tale.

Don’t miss Seth Gilliam in The Lady of the Lake on TVOD on August 27.
